My Review of "The Sopranos: Season 6"

This is almost like 2 seasons all rolled up into one season. Now I know what everyone means about the ending...

The Sopranos: Season 6 came out in 2006 and 2007. I don't know what happened back then but it felt totally different from the previous seasons. It seems like there was a bit of a hiatus between this season and the last. There has been a lot of talk about how this series ended and I now know why everyone was so pissed off about it.

The season starts off really weird. They suddenly got into this storyline of protecting their uncle Jun . Uncle Jun has these mental issues which we later learn more about but in the whole scheme of things he shoots Tony out of the blue.

This was an utter shock. I didn't anticipate on this happening and at the time it felt like this was how they were going to end the series up. Everyone basically has their fond farewells to Tony. Despite their differences even Carm comes in and professes her love to Tony.

Now some would say this is probably the true ending of the Sopranos series and the rest is all figments of his imagination of what could have happened if he got out of the hospital alive. Though if we go with it a lot happens after Tony wakes up.

First off absolutely no one is safe from death. I think this is why people that have watched HBO TV aren't surprised at big characters dying. Throughout the runtime of this season I couldn't handle anyone's death. The tension throughout this season will make any fan of the show's knees weak. This is perhaps the reason why people love this show so much.

Now that John is in prison his number one, Phil, has taken over. Unfortunately for everyone Phil is a demented sociopath. He's beyond worse than any of the other sociopaths that Tony has dealt with because he's not under his control. Phil in fact has more power than Tony because of his control over the city.

To make matters worse for Tony his whole family is going bonkers. Carm needs to occupy her mind or else she's starts to get paranoid about stuff. His daughter Meadow is trying to navigate through life. AJ, his son, is the worst of the bunch though. He is a whining complaining kid that just won't stop!

Granted I see where they're going with AJ. To some you can sort of see a resemblance to why boomers complain about millennials. The guy has it all and constantly complains about world issues. Despite his seemingly altruistic perspective of the world AJ is still ignorant to the things that he takes for granted. There's a part where he complains about how wasteful using fossil fuels are and then races off in a shiny sports car.

He has a conversation in the car with Tony that seems very dated. He talks about enlisting into the military to fight in Afghanistan and one of his dreams is to pilot a helicopter for Donald Trump. I don't know how they could have predicted how crazy this would sound in 2021 but it was pretty funny when I heard it.

Tony starts to see how parents shape their children. It's crazy because he believes that AJ's mental illness was passed down through heredity. This is true but there is a slight chance that Carm has some mental illness herself. Her obsessive compulsiveness shows and that's sort of the same way AJ spirals into his dark path.

Normally the seasons last for around thirteen episodes but this one lasted for twenty one. It truly was two seasons rolled into one. At times it felt like it was trying to figure itself out in the beginning. Then it came back with a vengeance. They played the whole Phil character perfectly.

They also took their time to dive deeper into some of the characters in this season. We got more of sense of why certain characters went off on different paths. Some of our beloved characters have not such great experiences in this season. It's heartbreaking but we have to understand that the life of organized crime is not all glitz and glamour. There is a dark side of it that people should be aware of.

Overall, I though that the start was really rough to get into. I know what they were doing in understanding the inner conflicts with Tony but it didn't feel totally necessary. The ending is also completely uncalled for. They know how to bait us as viewers and they utterly destroyed us at the end. I have to give this season a 7 out of 10. I am just so angry with the way they ended this series. The rest of the season is good but man that ending? Jeez..
