My Review of "The New Mutants"

A long awaited title that finally came out. I'm surprised more people aren't into this movie.

The New Mutants had finally come out in 2020. It came out at time when there was pretty much nothing out there because of the pandemic. That's why I'm curious why this movie doesn't get so much love from a lot of comic book fans. I'm looking at the young adults in particular because this is a movie definitely geared toward them.

This movie all starts off with our main character Dani. She narrates a story that she had been told by her father that helped her go to sleep at night. On this particular night there is some mysterious event that has the whole down in a panic. She is rushed out of the house with her father leading her out of the town. Something seems to be chasing them but she doesn't know what. Rather than stay with her, Dani's father goes back into town to help as many people as he can.

Unfortunately her father doesn't get to far and is mauled by some sort of creature only to have Dani stare at his lifeless corps before she blacks out. It's a very gruesome scene and it sort of sets the pace for the rest of the movie.

Dani wakes up from this horrific ordeal in some sort of psychological hospital handcuffed to a bed. She doesn't know where she is nor why she's there to begin with. Soon it's revealed that she's stuck there with a number of kids around her age. We soon find out that this hospital is a center to help out kids in her own predicament.

As the movie progresses we find out that each of the kids are considered mutants. Mutants are some sort of mutated humans with extra superhuman powers. The only thing is Dani and the others don't really know her powers. It's been concluded that she is a mutant but no one has any clue what she can do.

As the kids live their lives in the hospital they come to learn about each other and the hospital. Things start to reveal themselves slowly and nothing is as it seems.

In a way the movie is somewhat predictable but it's in a comforting kind of way. Sort of like watching a TV show you now what's going to happen but the process of revealing itself is very familiar. Just like how people like watching romantic comedies this is a paint by numbers action film.

I originally thought this was going to be a horror movie because of the trailers they had many moons ago to promote this film. These trailers were so long ago I almost forgot about the movie until it became available for streaming at home. I wasn't expecting too much and it's not an incredibly deep movie.

However, it is a fun movie for young adults. They have all of the elements that make up a good young adult movie. There's tons of questions and mysteries in the show along with some charming and attractive cast. This movie even has romantic love interests between the group. It's like they were blatantly looking to target the young adult demographic. That's not an entirely bad thing either. All of the other X-Men movies that came out were generally geared toward an adult audience so this was a little change of pace.

It's actually pretty self contained movie. It has a start and finish that could possibly lead to future movies. For the most part the movie ended with closure so even if they didn't continue on with more movies it would be fine with viewers. You can tell they're hoping to make more though.

Also I think this movie is based in the future around the time of the Logan movie. There is a scene reminiscent of the scene found in Logan where Logan's clone was created. That made things a bit interesting but they never bothered getting too deep into that.

There is a lot of potential with this movie license but I'm not sure if they're going to continue on with it because I don't think it faired that well. I don't think too many people watched it. It's a shock too because it's not a bad movie. It's actually quite fun.

Overall, I really liked the movie. It's not a masterpiece of a movie but it's fun summer popcorn movie. This feels like a movie made for us to just sit back relax and watch the show. I'm not too sure how many times one can watch this movie but for a first time viewing it's fun. I would have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. I can't give this movie too much negatives because the end fight was pretty enjoyable.
