My Review of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"

This was a pretty well planned out mini series. It makes me curious what else they have planned in their next series.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a mini series that has recently been released exclusively on the Disney Plus streaming channel in 2021. Not a lot was known about this series just as the first series "WandaVision" but I think that was a great thing. It's surprising to say but Disney Plus has really gotten us excited to watch TV programs again. That's a hard thing to do in today's day and age. With the internet not a lot can be kept secret and yet they where able to keep things tight lipped until the very end.

This TV series starts off right after the events of the Avengers: End Game movie. I guess that's to be expected as we're all now in I think the 4th phase of the Marvel cinematic universe. It's safe to assume everything from now is going to happen after that movie with the exception of maybe that Black Widow movie that's coming up. There's a rebellious group called the Flag Smashers that are revolting and causing enormous trouble. They believe that the world was much better before the infamous blip from Avengers: End Game.

The Flag Smasher leader, Karli, is one of a small group of rebels that have super soldier abilities. They got hold of the super soldier serum and injected themselves with Captain America powers. She's so adamant about her cause that she's willing to sacrifice the lives of many to get her point made.

Meanwhile Sam (The Falcon) and Bucky (The Winter Soldier) are trying to get back to life after the big battle with Thanos. We see a lot more of who they are and what their personal problems are. Sam has a family and despite the fact he's The Falcon he's not wealthy and doesn't make money off of his good deeds. His family in New Orleans is struggling to make ends meet and even his hero status can't help him get a loan at the bank.

Bucky on the otherhand is trying to make a new life for himself. The Wakandans have freed him of his Winter Soldier servitude. He still fears he has a bit of that Winter Soldier still left in him. Although he was under mind control when he was ordered around as the Winter Soldier he still remembers a lot of the horrible acts he did. Some of those horrific acts still haunt him today. Fortunate for him he's been given professional help to alleviate some of his PTSD but he's too hard headed to help himself.

In this mini series Sam and Bucky go hand in hand. They are basically partners whether they want to or not. At the end of Avengers: End Game, Steve Rogers gave Sam the Captain America shield and this is a point of contention throughout the series. Sam and Bucky had great relationships with Steve however Sam doesn't feel that he should wield the shield. Bucky believes otherwise. There must have been a reason why Steve gave it to Sam instead of Bucky.

Regardless of what Bucky thinks, it is ultimately Sam's decision as to what to do with the shield. Sam donates the shield to the US government and this causes a huge rift between the two. The rift becomes even bigger when the US government decides to create a new Captain America with a guy named John Walker.

That's when the series really slides into the next gear. A whole bunch of conflict among all the players in this series starts to ensue. Everyone is really intertwined with one another as well. I loved how every little action in this series has a domino cascading effect with the rest of the characters. Some of the scenarios are kind of outrageous though.

There was a scene where Sam builds some rapport with Karli the Flag Smasher leader and it's quickly disintegrated because of John Walker. Karli is supposed to be all knowing with all of her little spies everywhere and somehow she thinks that Sam is in cahoots with John Walker? It's kind of hard to believe but you have to go with some of these weird illogical thinking with some of the characters. They kind of get away with it because all of the actors did a fine job in adding charisma to their characters.

You kind of get an understanding of where everyone's motivation comes from and you can kind of side with each one of them whether they're bad or not. I liked the fact that there are moments where you start questioning whether a character is good or bad like John Walker. I haven't read any of the comics with him so I wasn't sure if he was actually going to be helping out or not. This harkens to the same sort of atmosphere I remember from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They had that same element of espionage in this mini series.

My only other bigger complaint is kind of a general one with comic book movies. They aren't consistent with the powers of the superhero they're highlighting. I find it particularly irks me when we're dealing with a regular human superhero. Sam doesn't have any special powers or strength other than his Falcon suit. Yes, he is very adept with the suit by now and should be very proficient but closer to the end of the movie there are scenes with him and the Captain America shield that don't make any sense to me. This is sort of the same gripe I had with Black Widow being able to go toe to toe with aliens with super strength. Sam shouldn't be able to whip that thing as hard as Captain America. He's a human we can only get so strong without steroids. Even with steroids I don't think you'd be able to throw that thing so hard. Then again this shield doesn't follow the rules of physics so whatever.

Most importantly, I was glued to the TV set every Friday anticipating the next episode. It almost felt like those days when Game of Thrones was airing. I didn't know what was going to happen and I'd have conversations with people to guess what's going to happen next. Well we don't talk about it as much as Game of Thrones but still there was the anticipation. The only thing that's missing is a group of friends getting together to watch this at the same time.

Overall, if you haven't watched this mini series and you're up to date with all of the Marvel movies you should definitely check this out. It'll be a really fun ride albeit a short one. There are only 6 episodes and really I was hoping for more. I will have to give this mini series an 8 out of 10. Disney Plus has been killing it lately with the Mandalorian, WandaVision and now The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. If you aren't subscribed then I think it's probably a good time to do so.
