My Review of "The Adam Project"

I have to say Netflix's big budget movies are getting a lot better nowadays.

The Adam Project is Netflix's latest big budget release in 2022. The trailers for this movie felt more like some sort of 80's space adventure but we got something totally different. The movie lures you in with some science fiction elements but instead sucks you into a family movie that explores the main character's own development.

The movie starts off on a pretty somber note. The year is 2022 and we get introduced to our main character Adam. Young Adam is doing the usual kid stuff like playing a spaceship game in virtual reality. It's revealed that his mother is dealing with a lot of stuff. Her husband, Adam's father had passed away not too long ago. She's trying to figure out what to do with her life.

Bills are piling up and she's trying to date to relieve her loneliness. To make matters worse Adam is somewhat distanced from her. He doesn't seem like a really bad kid but she is worried that his feelings towards her has changed. Her guilt mounts as her date arrives to pick her up.

As she leaves for her date Adam is stuck alone at home when a there is a giant crash not too far from his home. He goes to investigate the incident and discovers a strange man in his father's cabin. This man will eventually be revealed to be himself but 30 years into the future.

His older self has been injured from his escape from some group of people that want him dead. He had stolen a spacecraft and needs to accomplish a mission that will have him go back to the year 2018. Unfortunately he had missed the year and ended up in 2022.

To get his ship to run he needs the younger Adam because he's injured. The spacecraft will not allow pilots to fly if they're injured. Luckily younger Adam has the same DNA signature as older Adam. The plan is to use younger Adam as a key so he can go back in time again.

That's when the movie really starts off. We slowly get to know the older Adam. Everyone kind of follows the line of not trying to change timelines by divulging in too much details of the future. It even makes sense with older Adam because there is a reason why he doesn't want to alter the events of his past. He's there for a reason and sometimes taking punishment in the past may lead to a great future.

Not a lot of time travel movies focus on this. Usually they time travel to make their present or future a lot better. Instead older Adam had traveled to the past to continue his regular future. He doesn't want to change the past as it went pretty well for himself.

Sadly, Adam's goals change in the middle of the movie and the second act of this story hits with a different family perspective. They focus on the parents of Adam. We get to see why Adam grows up the way he does. It's really impressive that they were able to build dialogue for the young Adam to somewhat mimic what he will become later on in life.

Netflix has done a really good job in this family sci-fi movie. Although it explores some futuristic action that's not the main focus of the story. It really is a family friendly film that explores the consequences of actions of parenting. They also explore elements of how some things are meant to be despite how terrible the moments seem to be at face value.

Overall, I would say that this is a pretty entertaining movie for the whole family. The violence is at a minimum but when it happens it's pretty impressive. Gone are the days of bad Netflix CGI films. They did a pretty good job in this movie. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. I think kids and adults will likely watch this movie multiple times because it really is that fun.
