My Review of "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock"

Why would they kill the twist in the main title of the movie?

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock came out in 1984. Although it's only been 2 years it's weird that the cast seems to have aged quite a bit in only 2 years. Unlike the last movie this movie does in fact feel like a sequel to the previous movie. It's kind of cool too because if you've seen the previous movie you'll be anticipating on this movie.

This movie starts off right after the events of the second movie. Genesis has been activated and a new planet has been created. Spock had sacrificed himself for the betterment of the many. He basically saved the ship by fixing the engine of the Starship Enterprise. There's a bit of a recap at the very beginning of this movie.

Of course if you saw that last movie you're also going to anticipate this movie because they kind of planned it. In the previous movie Spock had mind melded with Bones before he made his big heroic fix. In that mind meld he mentioned, "remember". What he was really doing was placing his consciousness into Bones.

So Bones doesn't know exactly what's going on with him but him and the crew are noticing odd behavior from him. He's definitely got Spock in him and it kind of creeps everyone out once in a while.

Meanwhile on the Genesis planet the federation wants to keep it under wraps but the Klingons somehow found out about the immense power of this tool. Imagine being able to create a world where you can populate with your own species and not have to worry about resources for food and water.

They go on a hunt to retrieve this tool and in doing so endanger Saavik, David and a young Spock. I know! what the heck? So when they launched Spock's body into that Genesis planet in a torpedo apparently Genesis affected him as well.

Unfortunately, the Enterprise crew has been grounded due to the Federation wanting to keep the Genesis under wraps. Obviously Kirk and the gang have to commandeer their own ship to go rescue David, Spock and Saavik.

This is more of a fun adventure that kind of has the opposite theme as the previous movie. We used to think the value of the many outweigh the few. Well this time they're sacrificing the many to save the few. You're also going to have to throw your logic out the window at certain parts of the movie.

Special effects have actually gotten a lot better this time around. Obviously nothing like today's special effects. It's kind of cool to see some of the art direction in some of the practical effects and painted backgrounds. Sometimes it's really cool to see what they did back in the day before CGI to get things to work.

There is also this terrible fight scene closer to the end of the movie. It's really cheesy and looks reminiscent to an old TV show fight. Although, this is kind of expected seeing as the source material is from an old cheesy TV show.

Still there are all of the Star Trek elements to this movie. We have moral obligations and cunning ways of defeating their opponents. I just don't think it was as clever as the previous movie. Still a lot of people will like the fact that this movie came out. It sort of feels like a Rocky II for the Rocky series, like a redemption movie of sorts.

Overall, I still enjoyed this movie and watching it I get a better sense of family with the crew. They all helped each other out in order to get the job done. It's not a super great movie but as a fan of the franchise it is still enjoyable. I will have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It's good enough but i wouldn't want to watch it again.
