My Review of "Seinfeld: Season 2"

This show is starting to get its legs in this season.

Seinfeld: Season 2 aired back in 1991. At the time it was something totally different. I would say it's still quite different from any TV comedy that you can find today. This is a larger season and in some ways I feel it really started to get its legs. You can tell the first season was a tester but this one feels a little more grounded.

There isn't really a start to end story throughout this season like you would see in any other sitcom out there. All of the episodes in this 11 episode season are pretty well self contained. The beauty about it is that there are a lot of fun things taken from this season that they will exploit in later seasons. I guess you can say the same with the first season but this one has a lot more memorable moments. That could also be because there were more than double the episodes.

This is where the show is really starting to feel like the show that I knew back in the day. Here we have all four characters, Elaine, Jerry, George and Kramer, having significance in each of the episodes. Each one of them have a part to play with how the episode will play through. There is a butterfly effect that will ripple down that eventually hit them in the end.

One of the most notable episodes is the Busboy episode. Here we get a taste of how truly neurotic George can be. He's an overthinker and goes to great lengths to help out the guy he feels guilty for getting fired. I love how as crazy as Kramer is, he seems to be the counterbalance of another character's equally opposite craziness.

Here they start playing on different stories from each of the characters all to culminate into a big comedy bang at the end. I believe this formula really starts to take hold in this season. It's a recipe for more great episodes in the future.

Though this season aired back in 1991 it's uncanny at how much of the show still rings true over 30 years later. Some of the things are pretty relevant as you can see Kramer is a conspiracy theorist. A lot of his personality is actually seen in modern day media.

It's weird to think that each of the characters have some sort of relatable believable factor to them regardless of how zany their antics are. Of course many of us would never go this far in terms of their actions but we probably wonder what would happen if we did. This show kind of plays out those scenarios and it's uproariously funny when they do.

Another thing that I noticed in this show is the nuances that we don't see in shows or the media nowadays. Seeing as this came out in 1991 you can imagine that the censorship was a bit harsher. This show does a great job in curtailing a lot of those censors with dialogue. They talk around saying certain things and this dialogue is hilarious. It's can be poetic at times and it makes me wonder why shows don't do this anymore.

Even a fart or sex joke is nuanced. They never say these things outright but insinuate and describe in details. Today we outright blurt things out with full bluntness. There's a poetry in the way this dances around taboo subjects. I really appreciated this and kind of wished things were like that again.

Overall, I don't remember liking this season back in the day. Watching it now I had a lot of enjoyment from it. Maybe it was the time that I watched it but there are a lot of things that kind of flew over my head. This season was actually really fun and I know the seasons only get better. That's why I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. If you're a fan of this series you should go back to this season to see how the foundation was being built.
