My Review of "Last Night in Soho"

A visual tour de force that has you wondering what's going to happen next.

Last Night in Soho came out with some fanfare in 2021. Unfortunately not a ton of people saw it. Still I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into with this one. Critics adored it but the trailers didn't give much about the story. That's kind of a good thing in my books. It's a double edge sword when it comes to the popularity of comic book movies. Generally people don't discuss these type of movies so you're goin in with a blank slate. Then again these movies need more attention.

This movie starts off a little excitement in the air and with beautiful visuals. Our main protagonist Eloise is a fashion designer. She dreams of going off to London and making a name for herself. Fortunately for her she's got a very supportive grandmother. The acceptance letter finally comes in the mail and to her surprise she finds out she got into a prestigious fashion school in London.

When she arrives in London she immediately experiences a huge culture shock from moving from a small quaint village to the big city. Everything moves a lot faster and there's a ton of competition. Worse yet she gets bullied by her new roommate.

After her roommate has this big party at their place Eloise decides enough is enough. She has to look for a new place to live. That's when she discovers a nice little apartment. This is really when the movie really starts because a whole bunch of crazy things start to happen at the new apartment.

Earlier on in the movie they discuss Eloise's situation. Her mother had committed suicide and it seems that Eloise can somehow see her. As the viewer we're not totally sure if Eloise can see the supernatural or if she's inherited some sort of mental illness from her mother. This movie does a great job at keeping us guessing.

When Eloise starts staying at this new apartment she starts to have visceral visions of the past. She doesn't know what's going on because the visions are so vivid to her. They're so intense that at times she can't decipher the difference between what's real and what's in her head. This brings in a chaotic nature to the movie.

As Eloise runs away or chases these visions we don't know how the real world is going to react to her. She obviously seems very unstable but she's also oblivious of the cars that are flying by with the heavily congested city. We don't know if she's going to hurt or be hurt by anyone passing by.

The thrills continue to come at a frantic pace and it's iced with beautiful imagery throughout the movie. This movie is visually beautiful. There are a ton of details that warrant multiple viewings of this movie. I love how they played with color, music and symmetry throughout the movie. It really was like watching an intense art piece. I could even tell how complicated some of the shots would have been to make.

I guess this movie would be classified as a horror movie. I think it has more thrills than scares however the film is littered with creepy atmosphere that will have you wanting to scream at Eloise to get out! It's very rare that I feel like the filmmaker has me in the palm of their hands. This movie had me feeling as if they knew what I was thinking and they were just toying with my expectations.

Overall, I loved this movie and it's a movie that will ask for multiple viewings. It's not that often that a movie of this caliber comes out especially with today's expectations for movies. I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. If you're into thrills and horror do yourself a favor and check this movie out. I'm not even into thrillers or horror and I thought it was a great movie.
