My Review of "Hawkeye: Season 1"

It's the changing of the guard for phase 4 of the MCU. I see a lot of potential.

Hawkeye: Season 1 was a bit of a surprise to me when they first announced this TV show. It seems as though all of the Avengers have some sort of spotlight feature film or TV show. Naturally Hawkeye had to have his own show as well. The thing about Hawkeye was that he had a really small role in the Avengers. I became curious as to what they're going to do with this character.

The season starts off pretty unassumingly. A little girl by the name of Kate is living in a really expensive condo in New York city. It seems like life is normal for her but then all of a sudden there's this huge catastrophe and her building is getting torn apart by alien creatures.

Before you know it you start to recognize what's happening. This sequence is taking place during the events of the first Avengers movie in 2012. The perspective of this battle as a civilian is definitely horrific. Kate is about to be killed by one of these alien creatures when all of a sudden she's saved by Hawkeye. This is pretty much the catalyst moment for Kate.

She then grows up to idolize her hero Hawkeye. from 2012 to the time after the movie Avengers: End Game. Now she's a grown woman that has trained in archery and martial arts. She's very capable and kind of trying to figure herself out.

Meanwhile Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, is having a grand old time with his children in New York City. They're watching a Broadway musical based on the events of the first Avengers movie. It's pretty hilarious the way they set up everything. You can tell Clint is a different person after his adventures with the Avengers.

Clint is more of a family man. Losing his family for 5 years and suddenly getting them back has given him a newfound appreciation for them. He doesn't want to lose any time with them. We also notice that the wars that he has battled over the years have taken a huge toll on him. He's now deaf and requires a hearing aid but luckily he's still intact.

While Clint is on vacation with his kids in New York, Kate is at a charity auction. They're auctioning off a bunch of remnants that they've found in the wake of all of the battles that have been happening around the world. One of the big selling items was the Ronin's costume and sword.

For those that don't know, Clint had a short stint as the Ronin during the time when he had lost his family. This suit and sword have big connections to the criminal underworld. Hence a whole slew of thugs by the name of the sweatsuit mafia come in and attempt to steal the items of the auction.

Kate gets into action to thwart these thieves and in doing so she dons the Ronin costume to keep her anonymity. She's able to stop some of them but the damage has been done. Some very important pieces were taken and it's all over the news.

When Clint finds out that his suit is still out there and someone is using it he knows he has to put a stop to this. He sends his kids back home begrudgingly and decides to find the Ronin pieces and destroy them.

That's basically the catalyst to the whole plot. From there obviously Clint meets Kate and they have to team up in order to take down the criminals and get the Ronin pieces from them. Along the way they'll meet a number of enemies and meet new allies.

Since Clint never had any superpowers it really feels more like a mystery series than a superhero TV series. It's nice to see that everyone here has vulnerability but in a way it still is quite predictable. I do love the new characters that have been introduced in this series. All of them are charming and lovable.

This truly is the changing of the guard where Clint is starting to bestow his title to Kate. It's pretty obvious from the trailers for this series but it's really fun seeing the process of this happen. They have a father and daughter like relationship and I love how the two learn to work together to work against their common enemy.

There are actually a few characters that I can't wait to see more of from this series. It's like the first half of the season was just to reintroduce Clint in a new light and Kate as his equal. Then the last half of the season quickly rushed a ton of new characters. I can tell that these characters will have a bigger impact in later MCU films and TV shows but I'm not exactly sure what.

There will be a lot of surprises if you've been keeping up with all things Marvel. I'm sure diehards will get even more satisfaction with all of the cameos and easter eggs in this season.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this season. I feel that Kate could play as some sort of new type of Batman for the Marvel series. She's intelligent, charismatic and so fun to see on screen. I have to give this season an 8 out of 10. I hope they make another season and I can't wait to see how they're going to use all of these characters in future MCU shows.
