My Review of "Driven"

A movie based on the true events and scandals of John DeLorean. I didn't know the infamous car had such a very dirty past.

Driven is a movie that came out quietly back in 2018 based on the true events of what happened to world renowned car designer John DeLorean. We all know the famous DeLorean car from the Back to the Future movies but I didn't know about the scandals and dark past of the car and its creator. This movie was pretty eye opening and quite interesting.

The movie starts off with the main character Jim Hoffman. He's heading to court to make a statement and being given advice from FBI agents. The events are all told in his perspective of what had happened. As he's in court he starts from the beginning to let you know how he first got in trouble with the FBI.

Flashback a few years back and you'll see that Jim was a pilot and he was stopped by the FBI because he had been trafficking cocaine to the United States with his plane. Right away we start to realize that Jim isn't quite a great person. He's an opportunistic idiot that can talk his way out of anything. The problem is that eventually people will find out about his web of lies and see him for who he really is.

Instead of sending Jim to prison the FBI decides to use Jim as an informant to take down a drug kingpin by the name of Morgan Hetrick. That's pretty tough to do when Morgan already knows what kind of person Jim is.

So Jim has to relocate and start a new life but still try to get in with Morgan. Jim's new place of residence so happens to be in the same neighborhood as John DeLorean. The thing that nobody knows is that John is just as bad as Jim if not worse. John fortunately has the advantage that he is legitimate and has built a great name for himself in the corporate car world with his previous work on the GTO.

Unfortunately, John's Achilles heel is his own ego. He didn't believe that he was being appreciated and wanted to make a bigger name for himself so he decided he would create his own car company. His next design would be the famous DeLorean car that we all know.

Things seem to be going great until John realizes that finding funds for his DeLorean car company wasn't going to be as easy as he thought. As he continues to struggle with the development of the DeLorean car company, John and Jim start to become pretty good friends.

Eventually John will be involved with some scandals involving drug money that brings Jim to eventually testify in the courtroom at the beginning of the movie.

This movie can get intense in some scenes especially with the drug kingpin Morgan. This guy is off the walls crazy and is ready to kill anyone on the spot. It can get a little hairy but that's part of the fun in this movie. Those that like the antsy feeling that they liked in Uncut Gems may enjoy this part of the movie. It never gets to the same level as Uncut Gems but there's a similar type of anxiety that happens in this movie.

Unlike Uncut gems I found that this movie was more of a dark comedy than a full out crime drama. It explores all of the character's motivations but there's an element of comedy to the extremes that they go into but it's not something that everyone would find funny. I think this aspect of the movie made this movie feel a lot more comfortable to watch than Uncut Gems.

With the actors that played in this movie I actually thought it would be funnier than it was. It was definitely a lot more dramatic than I thought it was going to be. Still it was interesting to see what had happened to the DeLorean car company and its founder.

Overall, this was an enjoyable movie up until the end. After a certain point of the movie you know exactly what's going to happen next even though they give you a little bit of a cliffhanger feel about Jim's decision. It's heavily predictable so I kind of droned off a little by the end of the movie. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10 because movie before the end was pretty good. They just didn't stick the landing that well.
