My Review of "DC League of Super-Pets"

It's like a combination of Secret Life of Pets with Bad Guys but with pacing issues.

DC League of Super-Pets is a weird cartoon to have come out in 2022. We have already received a great animated feature very similar to this movie called The Bad Guys not too long ago. Maybe it's that movie that was freshly in my mind that made me not appreciate this movie as much as I should have.

The movie stats off with the introduction to the main character Krypto. He's Superman's pet dog from when he was on Krypton. Yes they make fun of his name in the movie. They seem well aware of the goofiness of the concept of this movie. Krypto has sworn to protect Superman at all times.

As they grew up together they've built a fantastic bond with one another. Now that they're adults things have shifted in their lives. Superman has met the love of his life in Lois Lane and Krypto sees this as a threat. He's worried that his relationship with Superman will deteriorate with her added to the mix.

Everyone seems to be aware of Krypto's anxiety so Superman tries to get Krypto a pet friend. There's a whole bunch of miscommunication involved with this and Krypto is pushed even further away.

That's when this movie gets into bonkers territory but it's a cartoon so it makes sense. We meet some everyday orphan pets at this rescue that Superman is trying to adopt from. They're all castaways that have built a fairly good relationship with one another. I like all of these characters but they do all seem to be kind of cliché characters after seeing so many of these cartoons.

We have the loner, the one that has self esteem problems, the one that has some sort of handicap that everyone knows except for themselves and we have a loose canon. They've all lost hope in a human trying to adopt them and I find this a little weird.

In some ways it felt like a propaganda film seeing as animals live their lives to be subservient to humans. That's all they live for and they really take pride in this duty to human servitude. I know I'm seeing too much into this but it really panders to those that own pets. You can really tell who their target audience is.

I thought the villain in this movie was very cleverly written into the story. She's a breathe of fresh air. It's funny because she still has the same human servitude attitude as the rest of them. The rest of the pets are telling her that she shouldn't trust her owner though. How can she though? She's programmed to love her owner. This whole master servant business in this movie really didn't sit well with me if you can tell. It goes especially when you're making a movie that's targeting kids.

This movie has all the elements of being a great movie. There is a decent story, you have big name characters, you have great voice actors and you have great animation. As I said before if it wasn't for the fact that I've seen this movie a thousand times before I would have enjoyed it more. The Bad Guys that I reviewed last month was almost the same movie but done much more stylistically and paced way better.

We have our formula of the misfits trying to figure out a way out. They find their way out but are given specific powers. A big bad guy is threatening them so they all have to work together and build a team to defeat this bad guy. You can see a it a mile away. The build up for this one just kind of felt like it was dragging in a bit.

I have to admit that last half of it did pick up but the first half was a bit of a sludge. Kids will adore the animals and the licensed characters that show up in this movie. The jokes will also hit home with them. I had probably a handful of chuckles so that's not too bad.

Overall, I still had an okay time but this movie spelt formulaic from the get go. The things that helped pick this movie up was some of the star qualities like famous voice actors and licensed franchises. I unfortunately saw through all the glossy paint over this mundane movie. That's why I have to give it a 6 out of 10. It isn't by all means a terrible movie but after seeing so many of these you'll start to see the paint by numbers.
