My Review of "Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer"

Obviously, if you're a fan of his comedy you'll love this but this isn't for everyone. Especially with the sensitive nature of today's society.

Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer launched on December 31st 2023. What an interesting time to launch this comedy special. It's made to be the first controversial topic of everyone's talking point for 2024. This comedy special had pretty much everything any Dave Chappelle fans would come to expect from his special. He threw all of the jokes at us and I think most of them hit.

He went in right away with jokes about the trans community. There's a reason why he does this. It's almost a running theme with his comedy has something to do with trans. It's something comedians and generally people do. He got engagement when it happened the first time and the reaction came in and so he continued to do it and got an even bigger reaction. It's a hot topic of discussion in the general public. The biggest reason I think he does it is that people tell that he can't do it.

You see Dave doesn't like to be told he can't do something. In all of his comedy he's spoken his mind and when someone says that he can't do something he pushes harder. We see that constantly with him smoking in all of his comedy specials. He even talks about it here at the end of his special with the story about the mob boss. He'll push and push until somehow he finally realizes he's wrong.

Though I think he's finally put an end to the trans jokes as he's shown that he's not afraid to make fun of any marginalized group when he talked about handicapped individuals. I'm sure those of you that have high standards of treating others with respect are not going to watch this special. Those that have high standards of respecting others should technically stay away from most comedy specials in general.

This is low brow humor that some of us still enjoy. You have to be of a certain demographic to truly enjoy this special and I fit into that demographic. This comedy special sort of felt like having fun with your buddies in a closed conversation in the early 2000s. There isn't any real restrictions of what any of you are talking about and you can feel that there isn't any filter in the discussion when you're talking.

Today we can see a lot of comedians and even in our own conversations today where we feel like we have to filter ourselves and you can see the expressions on people's faces when they are contemplating whether they should or shouldn't be saying something. That's not the case of Dave in this special. He is letting everything fly and it is very obvious. Then again he knows he can get away with it with his status as a comedian.

The jokes can seem quite juvenile as he physically acts out some of the offensive scenarios like a kid describing his jokes to other kids. There's a sense of gleeful joy when he does it. I admit that I felt bad for liking a lot of the jokes in this special. It really is a weird guilty pleasure to enjoy these things and it's even more awkward describing my enjoyment to the public.

He feels like that offensive friend that you have that you can't bring along to social settings but you're always wondering what they would think of in certain situations. Maybe I'm wrong maybe a lot of people will gravitate to this comedy as they might be fatigued by the sensitivity that we have to adhere to in society today?

Overall, I had a great time with this comedy special. There are obviously some jokes that I thought were a little too out there but for the most part I thought it was funny. I'm so surprised that these specials are coming out but in a way I'm glad that they are because it shows that there still is freedom of speech and we aren't being over censured. It gets an 8 out of 10 for me.
