My Review of "Color Out Of Space"

A bizarre horror/mystery movie that works in every strange way. Why did I like this movie so much?

Color Out Of Space is an incredibly bizarre movie that will have your head scratching at certain points. This isn't a bad thing though. There's so much unpredictability here that it helps out with the horror aspect of the movie. You don't really know what's going to happen or even what's exactly going on. They keep you questioning everything that's going on and I love this movie for that.

This movie starts out with the character Lavinia. She seems to be performing some sort of witchcraft in the middle of the forest when an onlooker by the name of Ward discovers her. Ward is studying the water of the area and this is pretty crucial for us to start questioning what's actually going on in the movie.

They already get you to start questioning the motivation for all the craziness that's about to happen. Is there going to be witchcraft? Is the water that they're drinking making them go mad but then they add another element to the mix. Not long after there's an incident that happens at Lavinia's family home.

There seems to be a huge purple or pink light that causes a huge crash and wakes up the whole family. The family goes out to discover that it is a meteor that has landed in their backyard. This is when the movie really goes bonkers. A ton of crazy stuff starts happening around the property soon after this meteor hits the family home.

It's convenient that the family lives off in a remote area of town so it's not exactly the easiest to get to the hospital or to get help from the local police. Still even before the meteor hit the family story didn't seem to be all that kosher in the first place. I later started to suspect maybe it was the water that they were drinking that's affecting the family even in the past.

Needless to say the amount of craziness in this household goes from zero to a hundred really fast and you're at the edge of your seat for each moment. I couldn't believe how sucked in I got. There are so many bizarre situations that I wasn't sure what was reality and what was in their minds.

Of course as a horror movie you're going to expect a whole lot of situations where the characters of the movie are naive as a baby deer. They seem to want to investigate everything that's odd even though they realize the amount of messed up things happening in the home. None of the characters seem to want to listen to one another either. Simple communication skills could have alleviated a few of the problems they encounter. This is of course a movie for entertainment so they had to do what they had to do to get the movie to keep going.

I also have to commend the filmmakers for the art design and filming of this movie. It is absolutely gorgeous and a lot of the art pieces seem to be very creative and imaginative. You can tell that they were willing to take risks to see their vision come true and I was surprised I didn't hear about this movie until it showed up on Netflix.

This movie isn't for everyone. It is a very strange movie and can get very frustrating with the amount of dumb things the characters do in the movie. Still if you're a fan of horror you may find this movie enjoyable. If anything you'll love the ideas that they implement into the movie with the art and story elements. It felt like a refreshing new idea that didn't fit the mold exactly.

Overall, I was really surprised how much I liked this movie. It was a really entertaining ride from start to finish. The unpredictability really made this movie way more enjoyable because you're constantly questioning everything that happens in the movie. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It is worth a viewing if you're looking for something a little different.
