My Review of "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget"

A family friendly movie that really ramps up with the clever action sequences.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is a movie I never thought would ever come out. I was a fan of the first Chicken Run when it first came out in the year 2000. Who knew they'd come out with a sequel 23 years later. It was a good movie but even back then it wasn't that popular. That's why I was really curious as to how something like this could have come out so late in the game.

The movie starts out with a bit of a summary of the events of the first movie. That's good because I haven't seen the first movie in over two decades. A lot of the target audience probably never seen it either. The heroes of the first movie, Ginger and Rocky are back in this movie. They're now older and have a spunky daughter that is the very much like her rambunctious parents.

After the chickens had escaped Mrs. Tweedy's farm they moved to a remote island. They're now all living harmoniously with no human outsiders. Unfortunately, this kind of feels as though it's a prison for Ginger's daughter Molly. As Molly is just like Ginger she doesn't want to be stifled in the village forever.

To protect Molly, Ginger constantly tries to sway Molly away thinking of exploring outside chicken island. She also doesn't tell her about anything that happened in the past. Curiosity of course gets the better of Molly when she discovers some bright and colorful trucks with chickens painted on the side. She ventures out to find out where these trucks are going.

On her big adventure to find the destination she meets up with a new friend named Frizzle. Together they travel to this chicken paradise but they quickly realize this is no utopia. Meanwhile Ginger, Rocky and the rest of the gang are on pursuit to save Molly from the clutches of whoever owns this truck company.

This build up to the great break-in is a little on the slow side but it reminds us of the great characters that we have in this movie. I love how each of the characters are so naive and innocent as they're navigating through treacherous territory. I still got this great sense of rooting for these chickens because they're all so lovable. The same sort of humor is there and it's really fun. I don't know if everyone will get this type of humor but you see it a lot in British comedies.

The movie really picks up when the chickens start to break into the impenetrable fortress and attempt to break Molly out of the fortress. Though these chickens seem cute and cuddly they can be just as ruthless if they're pushed. I wanted more of this and they give us plenty of these sequences. This is what really pushes the entertainment factor of this movie. I think children and adults alike will really enjoy these sequences.

One thing I miss about this movie is method in which they made this movie. It's almost too clean. Yes, it has the same aesthetics as the first movie. In the first movie, you could see little bits of flaws where you can see someone actually did stop motion to get these characters animated. I loved that about that movie. I could feel the love of labor put into that movie. Yes, there was a lot of work and love put into this movie but there isn't that same feel to this one.

Overall, this is still an enjoyable movie. If you loved the first movie you will enjoy this one as well. Not quite as much as the first but the humor and the lovely characters are still here. I'm glad I had a chance to check it out and I'm also happy that they made this sequel. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. I can see how they're planning on making this a franchise but they can end it here and I think that would serve the franchise nicely.
