My Review of "Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks"

It's like catching up with an old friend after a few years.

Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks is Bill Burr's latest Netflix exclusive special. It just dropped and as a huge Bill Burr fan I had to check it out. With everyone just coming back out again it's interesting to hear from all the comics. It's interesting to hear what's been going on and this feels like I'm catching up with an old buddy.

The set starts off with an awesome atmosphere. I didn't realize it was outside until they did a few pans of the crowd. The venue was enormous and so was the crowd.

Bill gets up on stage and gets right to the point. That's that old Bill we love. He's in your face but with a slightly more passive demeanor. He still has the same opinions as he has had over the many decades he's been doing comedy. However I had a sense something was different but not in a bad way. He seems as though he's grown as a person and it's evident closer to the last half of his set.

The first half is more of what we come to expect from him. He immediately calls out on all the hypocrisies that he sees in everyday life and pop culture. Some of them are pretty evident but he catches on a few that had me second questioning myself. The comedy comes out of the fact that all of these observations are so obvious and we couldn't even see it.

It makes me wonder if comedians are some of the most non-partisan people around. They never really take sides because they find the comedy in both sides. It just so happens that comedians usually try to take the side of the general public to get better reactions and comedy.

Later in the second half of the show Bill goes deeper into his personal life and has some self reflecting stories. He's able to use his personal story as metaphors for those that are having issues and problems today. It's a different kind of Bill and I'm not mad at it. Here he shows a lot more empathy than he usually does in his shows.

He's able to relate to certain groups that you would never thought he'd associate himself with. I found that it was genius because it shows that we're all related and we can somehow figure out how to relate to groups you never thought you could.

His home life was also a subject in the conversation. We see that his life is at a different stage now and that his family and children have helped him self reflect. This is apparent when he recounts moments where he's acted out in anger only to see his self reflection in the eyes of his young daughter.

I don't know how he does it but he's put some pretty dark thoughts about himself and his past into comedic gold. It's very personal but still very funny. When comedians are able to do this we tend to gravitate toward them because they become part of our lives. We feel we know them that much better and so that's why it felt like catching up with an old friend.

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this one. I thought that it's a slight change from what we're used to with his comedy but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's beautiful to see him grow as a person and as a comedian. Bill is able to continually evolve over the year and I'm here for it. I have to give this special an 8 out of 10. It will probably get you to want to see his older specials if you haven't already.
