My Review of "Back to the Future Part III"

The close out of the trilogy. I wanted to see if its still as enjoyable as I remembered it.

Back to the Future Part III is the end of the trilogy for the franchise. It came out in 1990. When I was a kid I thought this was the weakest of the three movies but as I got older I gained a new perspective. It's still not as great as the original but I have a new appreciation for it.

The movie starts off not too much earlier from where the second movie ended off. It's clever that they did this because it looks more like the ending of the first movie. This way they tie all three movies together.

To recap what had happened in the last movie. Doc Brown and Marty had fixed everything in 1955 so that Biff can no longer become rich and famous in the future. The two of them were all set to go back to 1985 when all of a sudden a lighting stuck the Delorean sending the Doc to the year 1885. This leaves Marty stuck in 1955 trying to figure out what to do next.

Now this movie starts off and Doc Brown has just sent Marty back to 1985 and he's rejoicing in his achievement. He isn't able to celebrate for long when all of a sudden Marty taps him on the shoulder to say that he's come back from the future. Obviously the Doc is stunned and faints.

Luckily for the two of them the Doc Brown from 1885 had written a letter for Marty and his 1955 version of himself. He notifies them that he's doing fine and steers them into the direction of how to bring Marty back to his time.

Upon looking for more information about the 1885 version of the Doc they find out that he's been murdered. They of course decide to travel to 1885 and save this version of the Doc.

This main plot line I found a lot more palatable than the plot line in the second movie. there's more of an urgency because of the death of the Doc whereas the story of Marty's kid in the future felt a little weak. Then again the series of events could never have happened had it not been for what had happened in the second movie.

I found a lot of the scenes they did in this movie were very cheeky. This movie is very self aware of itself. There's a number of times where you'll have Déjà Vu moments. That's because you have seen those moments before. Basically time is repeating itself.

We have the chase scene with horses that was similar to the hoverboard and skateboard moments from previous iterations. There are a ton of moments where Marty's manhood is questioned to push him to make irrational decisions. One of the cool things about this movie is that they flipped the switch between the Doc and Marty. This time the Doc is caught in a forbidden relationship rather than Marty in the first movie.

Still the characters are still tonally the same as they've been in the past two movies though. Doc is still the wacky over the top scientist and Marty is the straight laced do-gooder. We're now even more familiar with their characters because we've seen them in the last two movies.

Even though a lot of the action sequences mirror some of the previous iterations they are still quite entertaining. The little twists that they do for each of these action sequences are fun and yet still unique in their own way. The special effects still work surprisingly well in this movie however there are a few that make you kind of groan.

There's also a few story elements that kind of made me question what's going on. The inconsistency of their rules kind of got to me while watching this movie again. They always talk about not changing anything in the past but yet they're constantly on missions to make their lives better. Then there's also the fact that they never cleaned up after themselves. There's going to be evidence of their trips to these time periods for people to find.

I found a certain train sequence particularly funny. I don't care how loud you're yelling there's no way they can hear each other with a loud train beside their ear. There's even a crucial scene where it seems as though the hoverboard can go way faster than an 80 mph car. I'm not too certain who approved some of these moments in the movie but there's quite a few irregularities in this movie.

As a young kid first watching this movie I would never get these details. After watching a ton of movies some of these scenes can become glaringly distracting.

Still I was able to enjoy this movie and still think that it has a certain charm that you can't quite put your finger on. I did like much of the movie however close to the end it kind of falters.

Overall, it is still something you have to see if you've seen the first two movies. There is a lot of fun in this movie if you're able to shut your brain off for two hours. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10 and that's only because of nostalgic reasons. Kids of today's generation might not really get into this and would probably rate this movie a lot lower.
