My Review of "Ava"

An action movie that goes into a ton of different territories but never really explores anything.

Ava is an action movie that came out in 2020. As it came out in the year of the pandemic I don't think many people have heard of it. I think it had a ton of potential but there were too many elements of this movie that needed more meat. This movie could have probably benefited from being a TV series rather than a full out movie. It's too bad because the cast was great and they had so many great ideas.

The movie starts off with Ava as a chauffeur for some pompous businessman. As soon as you know it the businessman is flirting with Ava and they stop by the side of the road. Ava wants to know why he's such a wanted man so she tries to get some sort of intel from him. I guess this is a faux pas but she can't help herself wonder why she's has to kill these people.

She never gets her answer and instead forced to kill this businessman. The cycle continues as she continues killing businessman after businessman. This movie also goes into some nice action sequences to show that Ava is incredibly capable of dismantling armies of soldiers all by herself.

Pretty soon the heads up realize that Ava keeps asking her victims about why they're being targeted for these assassinations before she kills them. They want her to stop but no one tells Ava what to do I guess. She starts to get tired of the whole thing and asks her mentor Duke for a vacation. As an assassin this is hardly regular. Regardless, Duke grants it to her but he's weary of her safety.

Rightly so too, Ava is soon attacked by the kingpin Simon who I guess is organizing these assassinations. As the leader of his organization it seems that he's paranoid about everything and starts to go into self destructive mode when he found out that Ava was asking her victim's questions. He seems to have the ego the size of a mountain.

There are a lot of nonsensical things in this movie and the movie is somewhat very predictable. It's pretty obvious what's going to happen next but you're wondering in what wacky manner are they going to action those scenes in this movie.

The whole backstory of Duke would have been pretty interesting. None of it is explored. We only know that Simon was his first protégé and Ava is his most recent one.

Ava also has some sort of alcoholic storyline that they don't really explore in the movie. They seemed to add this to the movie to make it seem that Ava has her own flaws but it kind of falls flat because it doesn't really have any effect to the main storyline.

Her family is also involved. They created some sort of weird love triangle with her ex-fiancé and how he's going to marry her sister. It's really weird and they didn't really talk too much about this either. They touch upon this storyline a bit throughout the movie but only to beat up some crime boss that has nothing to do with the movie.

They even added a storyline that included her mom and her dad. It's like a 10 minute story that didn't really need to be in there. I guess they really wanted to emphasize that she was a troubled youth growing up. It was a nice moment but really lost in the movie because it didn't seem to fit quite well. Or at least it felt out of place.

Overall, I thought all of these side stories kind of made the movie go into weird tangents when it shouldn't have. If they did need those side stories they should have went about it in a more cohesive way that makes sense to the main movie. I liked most of the movie but it seemed to be all over the place. I have to give this movie a 5.5 out of 10. It's not a terrible movie but it can get pretty murky with all of the stuff they wanted to add to it.
