My Review of "A Quiet Place: Day One"

Probably the most elaborate "Make a wish" story you've ever seen.

A Quiet Place: Day One has just released in theatres. It is one of my hotly anticipated movies of the year. I loved the first two movies and I couldn't say no to seeing this movie right away in the theatres. One of the biggest draws is partly the audience ambiance when the intensity of the movie goes up. This movie is a lot of fun but there are certainly a ton of distractions as well.

The movie starts off in New York city at a hospice. Here we see a ton of cancer patience on their last legs. One of the patients that we focus on in this movie is Samira. She's obviously going through an existential crisis as she doesn't see much in living anymore. Her poetry is utterly negative and she's kind of lost her motivation in life.

This is when one of the nurses convinces her to go to a show in the city. Unbeknownst to them this is the day the foreign aliens are about to invade their city. Not too long after the show finishes there is a giant attack by these foreign invaders and the city is in ruins.

There's a whole bunch of things that happen and along the way Samira meets up with Eric. He's constantly having anxiety and panic attacks and clings onto Samira and her cat in order to survive this apocalyptic zone. The goal is survival but who is going to live.

If you're familiar with Lupita Nyong'o who plays Samira you may mistaken this movie for a continuation of another horror movie called Us. I loved that movie as well but I thought it would be so fun if this was a wacky turn and continuation of that story.

Each of the characters are build quite well in this movie. I loved their progressions and their interactions. There seems to be some sort of juxtaposition within each of them. Samira goes from wanting to end it all to wanting to end things on her own terms. Eric goes from a cowardly lion to the man of the hour.

The whole cast does a great job. They really helped get me immersed and enveloped into their environment. I really got into their relationship and had a lot of empathy for their characters. The visuals were really good too. I thought that the real shinning star in this movie was the audio though. This is a movie to be heard in the theatres. There is total spatial awareness when it comes to this movie. You'll hear things all around your head and they really make a difference because it's an element of this movie. They add very minute details that really add to the whole experience.

Although, this movie isn't impervious from some questions. There are so many unanswered questions that it made me feel like they were going to make this like the Godzilla monster verse series. I can tell that they're building this franchise's world and they gave me a sneaky feeling they'll make a TV series to cover all of those questions.

Some of those questions include where do all the bodies disappear so cleanly? Shouldn't there be blood, corpses or even skeletons everywhere? There's none int he movie after the aliens are done with them. This is hard to believe because you can see how populated the city is and how many people are running around.

There's a part in the movie where they teased a little bit of alien information but never really dived into it. They were eating something and it had me intrigued at what it was. One of the big things about this movie was that I wanted them to reveal more about this alien race that they're dealing with. They kind of did that in each movie except for this one.

This movie is aware of it's previous movies and played some of the famous things from previous movies to keep us viewers on our toes. They were able to play with our emotions and expectations with some of these scenarios.

One of the oddest things that I found about that movie was how smart that cat was in this movie. It was also oddly so well behaved in this one too. I know it's for the movie but in some ways it became a little unbelievable too especially for a cat. This cat felt sort of like a studio thing that was added in. I think maybe 10 years ago that cat would have been a dog. Market research probably told them that their target audience is more likely to have cats than dogs now and this is what they did. The reason why I say this is because the cat really acted more like a dog than a cat would in older movies. Also pets are all the rage in the western world lately.

Overall, I had a grand old time at the theatres with this one. I think it has to be experienced in the theatre despite the odd chance you may have some annoying patrons in the theatre with you. The full aural and visual experience is a must and if some of the audience members are really into it gets even better. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. I would definitely rewatch this movie in a trilogy marathon.
