My Review of "2 Minutes of Fame"

A rushed comedy that is tons of fun but has a few pacing issues.

2 Minutes of Fame came out all of a sudden without too much advertisement. Then again a lot of Netflix exclusives come out like this so I'm not too surprised. It's a welcome addition to the Netflix library in this time of quarantine. It stars a lot of funny people so I expected it to be funny.

The movie starts out with a YouTube video of the main character Deandre. He's basically ripping into a well known comedian by the name of Marques. Deandre has a lot of respect for Marques and so does most of the world however Marques has been doing some questionable material in a lot of his movie choices lately. The truth hurts I guess and Marques doesn't really like the fact that he's being taken down by some no name YouTube content creator.

Luckily or unluckily for Deandre his best friend Eddie is looking out for him. He's basically Deandre's manager and looks out for what's best for Deandre in his journey to fame. Eddie somehow got Deandre to qualify for a comedy competition out in Los Angeles. It's Deandre's chance to chase after his dreams.

The thing is Deandre has a son and partner in Louisiana. His relationship with his partner Sky is really rocky as he had lost his job and basically has no means to help out with the family. Sky feels as though she has to take responsibility for everyone in their small family and here's Deandre leaving to Los Angeles for a pipe dream that may never happen. She's been waiting for him to grow up and he's adamant about becoming a comedian.

Deandre has some hesitations to go to Los Angeles but Eddie convinces him to go and they two are on their adventure to fulfill their childhood dreams.

In the meantime, the feud between Deandre and Marques continues to grow as Marques learns that Deandre is in town and continues to antagonize his film role selections. A lot of craziness ensues.

This movie was pretty much exactly what I was expecting it to be. It's a paint by numbers movie that you can see coming a mile away. That being said it is still quite enjoyable. The banter that the older comedians have about the newer generation is an interesting insight into how older generations must view newer generations coming into their territory.

Vice versa, we see the younger generation's perspective into getting into the industry. It's quite different and quite a struggle. Even though you may have millions of followers on social media, this doesn't always mean that you have the ability to take on a craft like comedy. There's much more to the art than to get people to watch yourself. They talk a lot about the art of comedy and how to truly tap into becoming a great comedian.

There are a ton of minor story-lines that kind of quickly get overlooked. It feels very much rushed at some points. Some of the story-lines could have been omitted as this is really Deandre's personal journey. They didn't have to go too deep into some of the other characters but I understand why they did. It almost felt like this could have been a limited series but they didn't have the budget for it so they decreased the length and made it into a full on movie.

At least there are plenty of laughs in this movie. It is quite enjoyable and all of the characters were brought to life by the actors. Even though many of the actors were comedians they did a good job in making us care for the characters and understand where they're coming from with their motivations.

overall, I had a good time watching this movie. I think it's worth the watch because there are some nice chuckles here and there. For those that are looking for a quick comedy look no further. I have to give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It is a safe bet comedy but expect to feel a little rushed as you're watching this movie.
