Bucking the system

Prince Harry is the second son of Princess Diana and King Charles and was born into a life of privilege. His new book "Spare" has everyone talking and jaws dropped when he said he killed 25 Afghan soldiers and thought of them as chess pieces and not human. I see something very different going on with the Duke of Sussex which is that he is in a lot of pain.

He did break military protocol by telling the number of soldiers he had murdered and now may have placed a target on his back and put his family in danger but what I heard was a young man trying to come to grips with and downplay the fact that he had taken so many human lives. Sometimes when people are feeling awkward and not sure of themselves they write or say things they wish they could take back.

Take away the fact that his father is king and his grandmother was queen and you have an 11-year-old boy whose mother died in a most horrific manner. He was forced to grieve in public and accept the Camilla Parker Bowles as his stepmother when she caused Princess Diana so much pain and anguish.

Prince Harry has had to watch his father and Prince William be groomed and trained to one day rule a nation while he was not being taught to rule anything. There were rumors that Charles was not his father because of his red hair but Harry looks just like his grandfather Prince Phillip at a young age. Harry had to wonder what his purpose in life was supposed to be while dealing with an older sibling whose destiny was chosen for him at birth.

Always a bridesmaid

The title of the book Spare and Harry saying within its pages that Prince William was his best friend and arch nemesis is very telling. The Duke of Sussex had to deal with being the younger brother of the sibling who would be king and that could not have been easy. They had normal sibling rivalries just like other brothers except Harry said he once told William "You're going to be king and I'm not. I'm going to do what I want."He has told the world he wanted out of royal life for years and when he left everyone blamed his wife Meghan Markle.

After William married Princess Kate Middleton and they had three children Prince Harry fell further down the line of succession and with each child he probably felt like he was being pushed away from his lineage. The second-born prince became the proverbial "always a bridesmaid" watching both Charles and William keeping in step with royal protocol and preparing for the life of a monarch while he stood on the sidelines.

The Meghan factor

Harry fell in love but all people could see was the fact that his wife was a biracial divorced American actress with no pedigree. Racism and the paparazzi had Harry fearful that Meghan would meet the same fate as Diana so he fled his homeland. One reporter referred to baby Archie as a monkey and someone in the royal family asked questions about skin tone. The skin color issue is not a big deal because African Americans often discuss what color a child will be because we have so many varied hues. Having someone in Buckingham Palace ask questions on top of everything else probably seemed pretty bad at the time.

Some people wonder why Prince Harry did the Netflix docuseries, wrote the book, and is doing so many interviews and why he will not just remain silent and live his life? The Duke has shared that while the motto of the royals is to never complain or explain they do their complaining and explaining by planting stories and leaking information to the press. Harry says a lot of the negative publicity that comes his way and against Meghan is because of the royal family so he feels compelled to share his perspective and who can blame him.
