Meghan Markle could learn a lot from the life of Wallis Simpson

There is much to glean from the woman who dethroned a king.

There is one really huge lesson that Meghan Markle could have learned from Wallis Simpson and that was to not speak negatively about the Royal Family. It's too late for that now but perhaps there are other things that Prince Harry's wife can learn from the woman who dethroned a king. Edward VIII was destined to become king of England but fell in love with American socialite Simpson who was a divorcee. He abdicated his throne and chose love. He and Wallis Simpson married and lived in America.

Simpson was later quoted in interviews as saying that she continually tried to bridge the gap between her husband and his mother Queen Mary, Meghan on the other hand seems content to make herself out to be the victim and allow Prince Harry to be estranged from the Royals. With the death of Prince Phillip, Harry will be traveling alone to the funeral on April 17. Meghan is pregnant with their second child and did not receive medical clearance to travel.

Even if she could accompany her spouse it probably would not be a good idea. Right now there is tension between Meghan and Harry and the Royal family as well as controversy from the British citizens. Both Meghan and Wallace are considered as causing harm to the crown. In truth, Prince Harry and his ancestor Edward both simply fell in love with women who were not deemed suitable to be Queen. The same thing happened when Prince Charles initially wanted to marry Camilla Parker Bowles but Kate Middleton was considered as appropriate for Prince William.

The ire the British people had for Wallace and what they now feel towards Meghan is pretty tragic. Most people say that there is no way for Meghan Markle to bridge the gap with the Royal family because she has already said so many damaging statements. Royal watchers say that speaking out only brings more criticism and the Oprah interview did a lot of damage. No one knows what Meghan and Harry hoped to accomplish by airing the dirty laundry of the Windsors. Now with the death of Prince Phillip, Harry wants to be there for his family but will he be welcomed back with open arms?

Wallace Simpson received death threats and was considered the most hated woman in Britain. It's not quite that bad for Markle but close enough. Edward VIII gave up a kingdom and Prince Harry is not in direct succession to be the king as William's 3 children precede him. Still, the similarities are uncanny and cannot be ignored. Meghan should take note that Wallis Simpson went on with her life doing charity work and she never badmouthed her husband's family.

Perhaps Markle, like Simpson should lay low and go on with her life, without discussing the Royal family. She should raise her children and in time attempt to bridge any gaps if it's not too late and the bridges are not already burned. To be fair, Meghan Markle has the added burden of being biracial and the Royal family had never dealt with this before. No one knows except those involved if William, Kate, and other Royals were uncomfortable having a woman of color around.

Although little Archie looks white, at some point someone, perhaps his Royal cousins might have teased him about being black or even called him the N word. When according to Meghan, members of the Royal family inquired about the complexion her unborn child might be, she probably thought of these things and this led her to flee. Harry has said he was contemplating the fate of his mother Princess Diana and did not desire a similar fate for his wife or son.

The situation is complex and may never totally be resolved. What Meghan can learn from Wallis Simpson is to accept that she will never be loved by the British subjects and live her life without disrespecting the Crown. She may have been mistreated and incurred racial injustice but Meghan needs to fully embrace something that Wallace Simpson realized early on. Her arms are too short to box with the Royals.
