Entertaining, yes, but not necessarily a particularly accurate depiction. Mario is quite the portly fellow with a heavy bottom but that’s about all that’s left of the original cartoon character. At the same time, the series is starting to move into more adult territory and he’s probably not the one to represent the young men and women of today. Then again, I wouldn’t want to take the chance of a hypothetical non-fantasy world reaping the flesh of my young, artistic soul in a disturbing fashion. Luckily, there are still plenty of other possibilities as this fictitious Super Mario to choose from.

Evil Mario

Though evil isn’t exactly the preferred version of Mario, the Evil Mario shown here is a pretty good match. However, I can’t find a specific portrayal of Mario that represents evil quite so well as this. Mario crushes skulls in the sky and uses his evil powers to create marionettes that make rude noises. Granted, that’s pretty much all we’re going to see in this version of Super Mario, but I think it would make a great foundation for future variations. Maybe I’ll just start kicking other marionettes around like soccer balls. Speaking of soccer balls, I’m also willing to bet that there will be plenty of Mario games that involve kicking soccer balls or running around with soccer balls. And since sports are popular these days and Mario is a very playful and whimsical man, I think it would be a fun addition to Super Mario.

Andromeda Mario

The video game series has been turned into a fantasy series and considering the very dark tone of most of its movies and cartoons, the fact that there’s already a dark, evil Mario in a fantasy setting is probably going to put a damper on many gamers’ enthusiasm for it. Luckily, it seems like the creator of the series, Shigeru Miyamoto, is aware of this aspect of Mario and is ready to move beyond the visual elements of a fantasy universe to add more creative input.

According to Miyamoto, he wants the other new characters in the Super Mario universe to be represented in a way that doesn’t emphasize their physical appearance. Not surprisingly, this could mean more uses of computer graphics. Personally, I find this idea intriguing and I’m definitely going to keep an eye out for any appearances of Mario in other video games or even other types of entertainment. Also, this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. Miyamoto has already produced many animated shows, games, and movies. He’s probably pretty well aware of how popular Mario is and if he wants to have the same success with other video game characters, he knows it’s going to take more than just a few head scans and a few character expressions. It’s going to take an elaborate and elaborate world to design, explore, and execute. Since we can already see Mario coming into his own in Super Mario Bros. 3, I’m sure we can count on him to come back in any new project he ends up working on in the future.

That’s a wrap. Any other ideas for Mario’s possible new look in the Super Mario universe? Is this concept of a dark, evil version of Mario completely off? What other characters or things in the fantasy world of Super Mario would you like to see represented in this interesting fantasy setting? I’d love to hear your ideas.
