Hey, the title says it all! No Disney picks in here, we're getting nostalgic with top picks from the 70's to now.

Hey, cartoons aren't just for kids! A lesson I first learned watching Adult Swim on late nights in the early 2000s, waaayyy before Tom (4.0? 5.0? God he just keeps dying) and Toonami had any sort of say in that. Nostalgia can come in another article though, I'm trying to jog your memories about some of the wacky, inventive animated movies that used to come on TV, and definitely were not for kids. Stuff like . . . Fritz the Cat, and Beavis and Butthead Do America.

So I thought about making just a regular list about the top, like, twenty adult animated films- and I wish there were a better name for that, but it is what it is- but then I decided to mess around and get a little creative. And, who doesn't love a good astrology twist every now and again? Think I might be the first person to make a list for this specific topic so take THAT, Buzzfeed! Now, before we get into this, just know that not all of these picks are going to be pinpoint accurate. Some I might only pick because they got the closest to a few of your zodiac traits, and others might be really on the money. So . . . . I hope you enjoy!

1. Aries (March 21 - April 19): Titan A.E.

blonde young man holding space wrench

Now, listen, I really wanted to take this for my own Zodiac sign but I couldn't be greedy. I LOVE this movie! Space, snark, excellent soundtrack, and the Don Bluth Pretty Boy, just, ugh. This film is brimming with impulsive but courageous heroes, moody scattered humans- and did I mention this excellent soundtrack? Perfect for Aries!

2. Taurus (April 20 - May 20): Who Framed Roger Rabbit

grouchy human male detective and bombshell redheaded cartoon in trouble

A classic- a Titan in the adult animation field. Much like the Titan personality of those under the Taurus sign! Loyal, hardworking, stubborn bulls know what they want. They're also notorious pleasure seekers, be that a luxurious massage or any good time. Stubborn as Eddie, sensuous as Jessica, and a chaotic mess (from personal experience) any other time.

3. Gemini (May 21 - June 20): Tokyo Godfathers

three homeless people, the youngest holding a swaddled babe

A Satoshi Kon masterpiece, and not the only on this list, I figured this film wonderfully compliments the gentle and dynamic Gemini sign. Poignant, incredible emotional depth, and versatile yet flawed characters working together to get the baby back to their family. This tale of family and misadventure is perfect for Geminis!

4. Cancer (June 21 - July 22): The Animatrix

Now I know what you must be thinking- "how would a movie about machines overtaking humanity make sense to pair with a sign so sentimental?"

I mean, if you think about it, an anthology film detailing humanity's fighting spirit and their war over the machines is a really great topic for Cancer signs. See nine stories of tenacity, compassion, and desperate sentiment as they fight to keep the lifeblood of humanity away from mechanical overlords. And, as a funny little detail, many of the stories in the film deal with characters who are beginning to break out of The Matrix themselves using intuition and pure free will . . . and in many interpretations, Cancers are said to be so intuitive as to be almost psychic!

5. Leo (July 23 - August 22): Persepolis

two elder woman looking at a young girl's "punk is not dead" jacket in disapproval

A beautifully detailed film based upon the life of Marjane Satrapi as she lives through the pre and post revolution of Iran. Brave, outgoing Marji has to learn when to pounce and when to lie in wait during this tumultuous time in her life- both with dealing with the messy politics of revolution, and the strangeness of her time in Europe. A Leo would definitely appreciate the path Marji carves for herself to find her truth and strength even at her lowest.

6. Virgo (August 23 - September 22): Rock and Rule

blonde humanoid cat and redhead humanoid rat saving the world with the power of ROCK

A fun romp through a post-apocalyptic "what if?" featuring stellar hits from Debbie Harry, Cheap Trick, and Iggy Pop. I'll be honest this is one of the movie picks where it only might hit a few specific traits as opposed to the generality, but it's still a good watch in my opinion! The Virgo might best identify with one of the protagonists, Angel! A sweet cat hybrid with the pipes of a similarly blonde angel, she's dedicated, gentle, loyal, and can sing her way into and then out of situations that aren't beneficial to her.

7. Libra (September 23 - October 22): Princess Mononoke

no longer cursed prince and his trusted deer-like steed

Everything great and enigmatic about Libras- social, their most happy when everyone and everything in their orbit is balanced- and isn't this film about the search for balance between the newer town that seeks to modernize, and the very essence of nature itself? And when a Libra is stretched thin and they feel bereft, searching for a purpose that can bring them happiness once more? Listen you've got yourself a fine Ghibli film to represent you.

8. Scorpio (October 23 - November 21): Heavy Metal

blonde warrior woman holding a sword aloft as she rides something kind of like a pterodactyl

An anthology film with stories all based around a glowing orb that is meant to be all encompassing evil . . . not that I'm saying anything about Scorpios. Stories that can range from dark fantasy to zany futuristic conceptions, brimming with horror and eroticism- doesn't it just smack of the passionate, resourceful, and at times prickly nature of a Scorpio? A multilayered movie for a thoroughly perplexing sign.

9. Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21): Cool World

smoking hot blonde cartoon wearing a white dress and blue eyeshadow

Wild! Do you have a Sagittarius in your life? Are you familiar with their humor, their optimism, their bluntness and distaste for details? Then you'd understand that while Cool World isn't, um, the best- it's sexy, fun, Holli Would is hot, and did for 90's club music what The Crow did for 90's rock. And besides, who cares about silly details like cohesive plot or pacing? You know?

. . .

Fuck that!

10. Capricorn (December 22 - January 19): Paprika

dream sprite named Paprika, titular hero

Another wonderful hit from the visionary Satoshi Kon! Capricorns are disciplined, tenacious, and intelligent, so it makes sense to pair them with a similar film! A kickass scientist that moonlights as a dream therapist set on a course to fight for the minds, dreams, and the lives of countless. The challenges, the skills, the connections, are sure to entice Capricorns!

11. Aquarius (January 20 - February 18): Ghost In The Shell

cyborg officer Musanagi Makoto and her partner Bato

Now Aquarius is one hell of a sign (not mine, though, mad respect regardless). What else can match this sign than the original classic that heavily inspired The Matrix? You want a movie that checks all the Aquarius boxes? Deep, uncompromising, original, enigmatical, with characters that might seem aloof or temperamental with seemingly little in-between? Boom.

12. Pisces (February 19 - March 20): BELLE

BELLE, the metaverse avatar of Suzu, a shy high schooler

This movie has made quite a splash on the film circuit as of late, and for damn good reason! I can't think of a better match to the gentle, artistic, and empathetic Pisces than a movie that ultimately strives to show audiences what engaging with empathy can do for everyone. Written like a fairytale but firmly grounded in the hard conundrums of reality, BELLE can serve both the good and the bad of a Pisces, but ultimately offers up the true strength and beauty of humanity.
