Jeff Goldblum Is Heading to Jurassic World 3 Set with 109-Page List of Safety Rules

Jurassic World 3 is one of the first major Hollywood films to restart production. Universal halted production on this title mid-March due to the global pandemic. The global entertainment industry and its supporting businesses have remained shut down ever since. The studio was planning to resume production in July.

Studio Efforts

The production team of Jurassic World: Dominion is set to resume where they left off. Director Colin Trevorrow was already 4 weeks into a 20-week shoot when the team was forced to shut down. Pinewood Studios has been charging holding fees while production remains closed. This is adding to the budget of this and other films.

The UK's British Film Council, US Unions, and Universal Studios have been working on going beyond the safety standards currently laid out for England. Everyone is taking social distancing rules while filming seriously. All cast and crew will be tested regularly and receive health training. Over 150 hand sanitizers will be installed throughout the set. A private medical facility will also be provided. Additionally, a "Green Zone" will be set up so that those who have not yet been tested do not risk infecting the rest of the set. Universal has stated:

"Anyone with symptoms will be isolated immediately before being sent home. We want to make sure that we are going above and beyond the national protocols to create a safe environment. Cost isn't our main concern now: it's safety. We will take direction from our medical team, but we're confident that with the staggered scheduling and zones of talent and crew, along with a system of contact tracing, we can move forward with limited delay in production."

Film sets have hundreds of professionals working very closely with one another most of the time. Managing the set, crew, and talent of a blockbuster film in the new normal of social distancing, will be an incredible challenge. All previously ordinary behaviors on a set had to be reviewed and modified.

Industry Impacts

Universal and other studios have only recently started exploring pathways to restart production. There is a significant caveat. No filming can safely resume in the US since it remains a viral hotspot. Europe and the UK, however, have seen their infection numbers decline to manageable levels. Though social distancing practices are more stringent overseas, they are more readily followed in the UK and EU. Thus, making it more feasible to resume overseas work.

Other studios are taking note of how Jurassic World: Dominion is executing their safety strategy. If the feature is successful in completing filming without causing illness, other studios will feel less apprehensive about restarting their filming operations.

Studios are anxious to get their teams back to work. Hundreds of projects of various budget sizes were halted due to the pandemic. They are losing millions by the day as the work stoppage continues into the summer. As executives begin to review their studio's portfolio of unfinished work, they will be more selective about which projects to resume.

Cast Perspective

This latest installment of the Jurassic World films is directed and co-written by Colin Trevorrow. Jurassic World: Dominion stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, Mamoudou Athie, DeWanda Wise and Dichen Lachman. It is set to release to theaters on June 11, 2021.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight recently, Jeff Goldblum spoke about complications of returning to production under these circumstances. The studios are taking no chances and have undertaken numerous steps to provide a safe environment for the cast and crew.

Goldblum noted that there is a 109-Page List of Safety Rules. He states, "They gave us 109 pages. They invested all their heart and soul, and a lot of money, into making sure that we're safe. I won't bore you with the details, but we're all going to be quarantined in a kind of a bubble, all the crew, and all the cast. And testing and everything."

While England is on a better path to controlling the spread of the virus, public spaces are still risky. Those traveling there to work on this project are thankful to be working again. Co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt have already begun their work. Each has shared a few pictures from the set on their social media accounts. Howard has even shown off a few bruises suffered while filming.

Goldblum, who plays Dr. Ian Malcolm in the film franchise, goes on to say, "We're headed, in about a week and a half, all of us, over to England, where there are protocols galore. We're going to be very safe, I think. And we're going to shoot Jurassic World…We know it's a risky time, but we feel it's good. Sam Neill's there and Laura Dern and Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard; Colin Trevorrow's directing, and there are gonna be some dinosaurs."
