Movie review

Since the film’s World Premiere at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, I was expecting to watch it as soon as possible, and I have to admit that I am not disappointed at all!

Inside Out is a 3D, computer-animated fantasy/comedy movie, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film has an original, unique, and imaginative concept: The viewers follow the life of an 11-year-old girl called Riley Anderson, whose five emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear—in her mind will help her overcome life's challenges after moving from the Midwest to San Francisco. The five emotions live in the headquarters, and control how Riley feels. Joy and Sadness go on a wild journey to get back to the headquarters after being accidentally kicked out.

This incredible movie got a great voice cast, with Amy Poehler, as Joy (Parks and Recreation, Mean Girls, Shrek the Third); Phyllis Smith, as Sadness (The Office, Bad Teacher); Lewis Black, as Anger (Man of the Year, Falling for Grace); Mindy Kaling as Disgust (This is the End, The Office, No Strings Attached); Bill Hader, as Fear (SNL, Night at the Museum 2, Pineapple Express); Diane Lane, as Riley’s Mum (Man of Steel, Judge Dredd, Jumper); and Kyle MacLachlan, as Riley’s Dad (Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives, Sex and the City). The vocal performances have been praised, along with the smart screenplay, subject matter, concept, and Michael Giacchino’s musical score.

With Inside Out as their 15th movie to be released, Pixar marks the 20th anniversary of the first-ever computer animated feature,Toy Story, in 1995. It is in the same vein of the latter as an inventive, charming, funny, and ambitious—but above all, a moving—masterpiece. The film received numerous awards and accolades, such as 15 Best Picture nominations, 21 Best Original Screenplay nominations, and 40 Best Animated Feature nominations, from over 50 organisations.

It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, at the 88th Academy Awards; 10 out of 14 Annie Awards, at the 43rd Annie Awards; the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards; the Best Animated Feature, at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards; and the Best Animated Film, from the New York Film Critics Circle, the National Board of Review, and at the 69th British Academy Film Awards.

Inside Out is an outstanding, and absolutely delightful, addition to Pixar/Disney's already-rich library of modern animated classics. It is powerfully moving, and is inventive, with an original and audacious concept for family audiences that will change the way people think, about the way people think. This touching and psychologically clever movie can be seen as pure entertainment with a therapeutic view, giving children a path to managing their emotions and feelings.

This is the kind of movie—one of the best films of the 21st century—which attracts and pleases grown-ups and kids for its entertainment and fun, but is also deep, emotional, mature, and smart. Visually, the film keeps the spectators in alert, with exquisite detail and colours. The challenging Inside Out movie has been celebrated and embraced by the public.

Personally, I am a big fan of animated movies, but this is the first time I really enjoyed myself watching one of those since Up—the 2009 American 3D computer-animated comedy-drama/adventure film—due to character interaction, the fact that you can laugh one minute and about to cry the minute after, and because of the movie's “how do they come up with this story?” vibe. After watching Inside Out, I changed the way I think about people and, mainly, myself.

I recommend for everyone to watch Inside Out, at least one time!

Two words: "Animation Masterpiece!"
