Infinity Pool

There is a history of horror movies getting undervalued by awards season. Last year one in particular that drew attention was Mia Goth and her performance in Pearl. The movie as a whole was absolutely snubbed as its quality could most definitely go toe to toe with anything nominated last year. But we will have a more in depth discussion on that later. Pearl won me over and I will now watch anything that stars Mia Goth. Which brings me to Infinity Pool. I am now presenting my formal review for Mia Goth’s latest appearance, Infinity Pool.

Right off the bat we’ve got some very interesting cinematography choices. We’ve got some rotating camera shots already throwing the audience into the weirdness and the unease of this film. And these very unique kinds of shots become their own kind of character throughout the movie. We’ve got plenty of shots in silence, birdseye shots, up close shots at unusual angles. All pointing to the idea that there is just something off about this resort. This is juxta positioned nicely with a majority of the shots. The style is very much like White Lotus. Seems to be the resort but weird kind of style. Though I hope that unlike White Lotus there is a point to this movie.

5 minutes in and I already have to praise Mia Goth. This woman has more range and talent then any new and up and coming actress lately. The way that she uses her voice is incredible. Besides the fact that she’s clearly the same gorgeous woman you would not know that this is the same woman that was in Pearl. Gabbi coming up behind James and just jerking him off with no facial expression is literally so funny. The woman is just incredible at making you feel exactly what she wants you to. I also love that she seems to only do weird horror movies.

The main conflict seems to be that James hit a dude with the car and now he and Em are being brought in for it. Not quite sure how the local law enforcement found that out considering it wasn’t their car and they weren’t the ones that rented it but okay. Anyway James gets a choice between being executed for his hit and run or duplicated. Obviously he chooses to not die and a double of him is created to die in his place.

The story is unnecessarily chaotic. The whole movie was just for shock value and there was nothing to it. I don’t need a big thematic drive in every movie, but I do expect coherency and there simply was none. There was no story, and you can barely decipher a plot. This has to be one of the worst movies of the year. At least the other bad movies had a story, poorly executed stories that were in fact, not good. But they had stories. Infinity Pool lacks any kind of narrative and watching it was truly a waste of time. The only semi-redeemable thing about this movie is Mia Goth.

Honestly the pacing is really slow, I would have liked for the story to have moved a little faster. Once we’ve established the weird tone you really could have just gone for it. Now I think the point of the pacing was to establish some more unease in the story but that wasn’t necessary. I hate when stories are dragged down by directors or writers going too hard into their point. The cinematography did its job, I didn’t need upsettingly slow pacing also. It's the difference between having a story to tell and actually knowing how to tell it.

I am very intrigued by her, especially after volunteering at a film festival where her films were sold out almost immediately. Think she has a long road ahead with her talent and the usual Hollywood runaround...
