Frontiersman #2

Image Comics 2021

Written by Patrick Kindlon

Illustrated by Marco Ferrari

Lettered by Jim Campbell

One hundred and fifty feet up a tree and all over the news, Frontiersman is just asking to be attacked. An old foe obliges—and he’s a cosmic menace to boot! But does Galaxie Prime have a more complex motive for the battle? (Yes.)

I really like this book. It has a whole lot of charm, chutzpah and heart to it. I like that the Frontiersman is a socially conscious hero of the past being asked to do something to help out with trees, environmentalism is an important cause of course, and this is going to set up a slew of conflicts, revelations and maybe just maybe reignite some purpose within him. One aspect of this issue that I am enjoying is seeing the new characters being introduced and how this changes the dynamic of the series once again. This leads me to the fact that with only two issues out right now nothing feels static, it is constantly changing and evolving and this means that you never quite know what is going to happen. I love this about this book because you know it is never going to be boring nor will what comes next become predictable. Patrick’s ability to keep the reader on their toes is a godsend in comics.

I am very much enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter does a magnificent job highlighting their personalities. The pacing is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing more of the story and introducing new characters leaves us bewitched.

I’m impressed with the way that we see this being structured as well as how we see the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. These avenues that are opened up add some great depth, dimension and complexity to the story whether or not they are to be explored. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is extremely well achieved.

The interiors here are extremely interesting. The linework is clean, crisp and sharp and with how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create the detail within the work is nicely rendered. It certainly creates a very nice unique and distinct style to the work which also helps to showcase this great creativity and imagination being utilised. I am appreciative of the way we see backgrounds being utilised as they enhance and expand the moments. They also work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such a spectacular eye for how colour works.

I think this is a unique, interesting and different kind of book and it really does pique the curiosity in some wonderful ways. This engages the reader nicely and does a great job connecting the reader to the characters in some really, really great ways. With some superb writing and interesting characterisation wrapped up in these lovely and distinctive interiors definitely makes for a fabulous read.
