There are some things that I just don't understand about the comics industry...

As a fan of comics, I have always been fascinated by the industry that creates them. From the writers and artists to the publishers and distributors, there are many moving parts that make up this unique world. However, there are some things that I just don't understand about the comics industry. In this blog post, I'll be sharing five of those things with you.

1. The Importance of Variant Covers

One thing that has always puzzled me about the comics industry is the obsession with variant covers. For those who don't know, variant covers are different covers for the same comic book issue. Sometimes they feature different artwork, while other times they feature exclusive content or special features.

While I understand that variant covers can be collectible and appeal to hardcore fans, I don't quite understand why they are so important. It seems like a lot of time, effort, and money go into creating these variant covers, and I'm not sure that the payoff is worth it. Why not focus on creating great stories and artwork instead?

2. The Constant Reboots and Retcons

Another thing that I don't understand about the comics industry is the constant reboots and retcons. For those who don't know, a reboot is when a comic book series starts over from scratch, while a retcon is when previously established continuity is rewritten or ignored.

While I understand that reboots and retcons can be used to attract new readers or freshen up a series, it seems like they happen way too often. It can be frustrating for longtime fans who have invested time and money into a series, only to have it wiped away or changed dramatically. Why not focus on building upon established continuity and creating new stories within that framework?

3. The Lack of Diversity

One thing that has always bothered me about the comics industry is the lack of diversity. While there have been some strides made in recent years, it still seems like the majority of mainstream comics feature white, male protagonists.

Why not create more comics featuring diverse characters and creators? Not only would this be more representative of the real world, but it would also attract a wider audience and help to grow the industry.

4. The Treatment of Creators

Another thing that I don't understand about the comics industry is the treatment of creators. While some creators are treated well and receive the recognition and compensation they deserve, others are not so lucky.

Many creators are underpaid, overworked, and undervalued. They may not receive royalties for their work or have their names featured prominently on the covers of the comics they create. Why not treat all creators with the respect and compensation they deserve?

5. The Lack of Accessibility

Finally, one thing that I don't understand about the comics industry is the lack of accessibility. While digital comics have made it easier to access and read comics, there are still many barriers that prevent people from enjoying this medium.

Comics can be expensive, especially if you're trying to collect entire series or runs. They can also be hard to find if you don't live near a comic book store or have access to a library that carries them. Why not make comics more accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or financial situation?

In conclusion, while I love comics and the industry that creates them, there are some things that I just don't understand. From the obsession with variant covers to the lack of diversity and accessibility, there are many areas where the comics industry could improve. By addressing these issues, we can make comics a more welcoming and inclusive medium for everyone to enjoy.
