Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel & Black Widow already have their films, who is next?

Superhero movies are a staple for Hollywood big blockbusters now. But after over a decade, it is only now female heroes are finally getting their own spotlight films. Wonder Woman was the first and now has two films, Captain Marvel shortly followed with her sequel on its way and Black Widow's film was released during the Covid pandemic. Each film has been praised and criticised for various reasons, but they do bring a powerful message about equality and encourage young female fans to the genre.

It is highly likely we will see more female heroes getting their own films in both Marvel & DC's future film roster. Here are five heroines worthy of their own film and strong enough to carry a good script.

5. Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl

Hawkgirl brings multiple options right off the bat, or in this case bird. Depending on which incarnation they chose she could either be an alien from the planet Thanagar or a woman resurrected again and again with her lover Hawkman. The one more often used as the prime premise so far when featuring Hawkgirl is the Thanagarian warrior angle. This option allows DC to play with how her film could play out.

Her film could see how she becomes stranded on Earth and ending the threat to Thanagar is what will strand her on an alien world. There it would allow her to find her new place amongst humans and eventually leading her to join the likes of the Justice League. It would not be a crazy option for DC as the character was highly popular in the animate Justice league series. It would also bring fans begging to see Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman together to re-enact some of that oil and water dynamic the duo had on the show.

4. Supergirl

Supergirl

Now this one is a little tricky, as yes there was a film in the 1980s for the character, but I think we can say it is time for a new Supergirl to grace the big screens. An incarnation is set to appear in the upcoming The Flash, but this incarnation is likely to be from an alternate universe and not the Supergirl of the DCEU. So, Kara could still debut in her own solo DC film away from her cousin.

With the recent live-action series showing how aspects of Supergirl's origin can be altered to strengthen the character. The DCEU could become creative and find a way to have Kara debut in a way unexpected. Young Justice have teased at the end of season four Phantoms that their version of Supergirl will be different to before. So why not a DCEU version breaking away from the norm also. Perhaps showing Kara rejecting her cousin to begin with rather than leaning on him for support on her new home Earth.

3. Spider-Woman

Spider-Woman

Spider-Man may be better known, but Spider-Woman is very different. Not linked to the better-known web-slinger, Spider-Woman has been a major role within organisations such as S.H.I.E.L.D. So, with Black Widow now being out of the MCU, there is a slot open for Fury & Hill's next top on the ground operative. Spider-Woman is perhaps the best candidate to fill Black Widow's gauntlets, and both being spider-themed works also.

With a drastically different origin to Peter Parker, Jessica is the result of a HYDRA experiment. With the ability to fly, shoot venom blasts and release pheromones, she has abilities more extreme than Spider-Man. Her inclusion to the MCU would also allow them to explore the friendship she has with Captain Marvel in the comics and be a new spy for the heroes to employ.

2. Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon

Yes, you did not see this one coming, but I never said the heroines had to be contained to Marvel and DC. Sailor Moon is a highly popular manga and anime franchise, with fan all around the world. Using magic, superpowers and love, heroines unite to save the Earth from threats of the past, future and far reaches of space. It is a franchise that would open up an entire world of films for fans, as a success could see both sequels following the heroines in further adventures, but also prequels showing the past of the heroines.

It would hold strong options for representations of strong female characters and LGBTQ+ characters. It is an option that also allows for spectacular visuals both in action sequences but in visions of the ancient Moon Kingdom. While it seems like a crazy option for some, I bet if you asked any Sailor Moon fan if they would like to see a film franchise off their sailor suited heroines, you will get a very enthusiastic reaction. So, this should then make you ask the question, "why have I not checked out this franchise?"

1. Storm

Storm

With the sad passing of Chadwick Boseman and Marvel having plans to bring the mutants to the front of the MCU, Storm should be their flagship mutant and carry on the mantel of representation started in Black Panther. While many would say this should fall to Wolverine, I argue he has had his time and was played superbly by Hugh Jackman. Instead, look at the ever so interesting weather witch mutant called Storm. As her past is just as impressive and epic as Wolverines.

She has strong ties to Black Panther in the comics, and with Boseman's passing this could be altered to show Storm striving to carry on his message of understanding between different groups. This would also work with the primary mission of the X-Men. It would also allow the MCU to make big plans for the character as in her time she has been a member and leader of the X-Men, leader of the Morlocks, member of both the Fantastic Four and Avengers, worshiped as a goddess, a street thief, a Queen and so much more. She would be a fantastic representative for not just a strong woman but a strong black woman who would inspire millions of young girls.

Which superheroines would you love to see helm their own solo superhero film?

My vote would go to Squirrelgirl! I can see it being a more light-hearted romp. Make it a full-on comedy. Also with your article's thumbnail on the top page today I've been giggling at how Wonder Woman looks thoughtful and compassionate, Black Widow looks like a cast-iron badass... and then Captain Marvel looks like she just slapped down a bunch of coupons that she KNOWS have already expired and she's daring the Kroger's cashier to call her on it.

A good list, and I would also consider Gertrude from "I Hate Fairyland" for her own movie (look her up)!

You covered mine in your article perfectly. I'm certainly up for your ideas, and I would also love to see a Supergirl film where she turns evil too.
