Batgirl was one of the most discussed potential castings of 2021. The role was eventually awarded to In the Heights star Leslie Grace. Grace will appear as the most recognizable name to wear the Batgirl suit in Barbara Gordon.

Fast forward a few months, and there have been multiple set photos released along with her suit. It is very respectful to the Yvonne Craig suit and definitely draws inspiration from the Burnside comics. Burnside was a 2014 storyline that occurred during DCs New 52 storyline.

Barbara is the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, and from early stills, it is evident she is following in her father's footsteps and is either educating herself to join the GCPD or already has a career within the police force. JK Simmons is set to reprise his role as Jim Gordon, which keeps the continuity the same from previous DC Films.

Other details about the film are that Brendan Fraser will star as the villain Firefly and Michael Keaton will appear as Bruce Wayne post The Flash. The plot revolving around these characters is primarily unknown at this time, but with the number of set stills that have already leaked, it is only a matter of time before we get more details.

Leslie Grace was one of many actresses who auditioned for the role. The final four came down to Grace, Haley Lu Richardson, Zoey Deutsch, and Isabela Merced. After that, it came down to Grace and Richardson. Richardson bowed out before the final round of testing began paving the way for Grace to pave the role.

Principal photography began in Glasgow on November 30, 2021. Adil El Abri and Bilal Fallah are directing the film with a script from Hodson. This will be Hodsons third script within The DCEU, following Birds of Prey and The Flash. Hodson seems to be a solid choice as fans have taken to Birds of Prey and have continued to show interest in The Flash and Batgirl.

Batgirl is currently set to release on HBO Max in late 2022, but recently Blue Beetle was shifted from a strictly HBO Max release to a theatrical release. So, hopefully, Batgirl can head down the same path and have a wider reach with audiences. The cast and crew deserve the chance to reach as many eyes as possible, given that HBO Max is only available in the US with international deals to be viewed in other countries.

While it's not a given that fans will enjoy this film, it seems like early reactions to Leslie Grace and the suit have really turned the tides towards the positive. Barbara Gordon is a prime member of the extended Batman family, and her introduction could lead to the inclusion of other members such as Dick Grayson and others. Gotham has a lot of lore and villains that could be lent to Batgirl to help bring the city to life. Barbara seems poised to become the central crime-fighting vigilante for Gotham if the rumors are true that The Flash is Ben Affleck's last appearance as the caped crusader.

Speculation can continue as the film continues through principal production. Once that is concluded, fans can expect a first look teaser and then a more detailed trailer. But, for now, we can revel in the fact that El Abri and Fallah seem to have respect for the source material and that they are headed in the right direction. As this is a crucial point for the DCEU to finally establish a direction, fans will likely continue to follow all Batgirl news as it happens. It is a great time to be a DC fan with exciting new content coming in 2022 and beyond.
