And We Can't Wait To See It!

When it comes to insanity you can count on one name, James Gunn. Some are very critical of his style while others love each and every frame that comes to life in his films. Gunn has directed for both Marvel and DC. It appears that after he is done with Guardians of the Galaxy 3 he will be heading back to DC for a secret television project.

With Gunn’s recent work on Peacemaker, fans have begun speculating as to what his next secret project could be. Gunn recently spoke with Collider's Steven Weintraub where he was very coy about the upcoming project:

"You know, we're stepping forward. It keeps happening. We'll see what's happening, and I'll know what's happening very shortly. I dealt with it last night and this morning.”

He also confirmed it would in fact be a television series and not a feature film.

Gunn and DC had a massive year in 2021 as The Suicide Squad was the most streamed DC project during the opening weekend on HBO Max with 2.8 million views. It beats out Zack Snyder's Justice League (1.8 million views) and narrowly defeated Wonder Woman 1984 (2.2 million views). The Suicide Squad has a few characters reappearing from the 2016 film. While it stumbled at the box office, fans did seem to have a positive reaction to the film. Gunn was given complete freedom over which characters could appear, and he opted for some that are very seldom seen on the comics pages.

Gunn’s latest television project was Peacemaker starring John Cena, who reprised his role from The Suicide Squad. Peacemaker is a highly trained assassin who will do absolutely anything to maintain peace. We got glimpses as to how far he takes that code and Peacemaker should answer more questions about why he is the way he is.

Audience members that enjoyed The Suicide Squad have already brought up that they would love to see Ratcatcher 2 (up and coming actress Daniela Melchior) and Bloodsport (Idris Elba) return. Another character fans would love to see turn up again is King Shark, but as more of a supporting character than a potential starring character.

It is also entirely possible that Gunn will bring something new, something without previous connections to the Suicide Squad, and potentially lead us to other facets of the DCEU. Peacemaker is sure to add to the universe and present Gunn with an opportunity to explore one of those many Easter eggs.

As of now, Gunn is completing work on The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the third film in the Guardians trilogy. Regardless of your personal feelings about the director, the man does like to stay busy and loves exploring comic book worlds. It looks like Marvel and DC both want to keep the doors open for James Gunn, and that is smart business. He has proven to be a box office draw and has been successful with both critics and general audiences.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is set for release by the end of 2022 with Guardians 3 coming in 2023. As both are major shoots that require a tremendous amount of post-production, the earliest this new DC project may begin shooting is winter 2022.

Peacemaker released its first three episodes on January 13th with one new episode dropping weekly on HBO Max from here on out. So for now at least, Gunn’s DC future is confirmed, and more details will begin to emerge as he finishes up Guardians.
