10 Fast 10 Furious

The Fast and the Furious franchise has just released the 10th installment in its series. It was, as expected, a movie. This was my husband's first time ever watching a Fast and Furious movie and it met and exceeded all of his expectations. And though at this point we are used to logic and reason having no place in this franchise, they have truly outdone themselves with the physics defying stunts in this one.

I want to start off by saying that the best part of this movie was by far Jason Momoa. I have said for a lot of years that the man is an absolutely delightful human being but that his acting range doesn’t exactly exceed grunts and brooding. However I am happy to eat my words, this role fit his personality so well and he was hilarious and a joy to watch on screen. There will so very obviously be a next movie and I hope that he continues to be a part of this franchise going forward.

Now we have reached a point in the franchise where I am unsure whether it is bad dialogue or bad delivery because this problem only arises with Vin Diesel's lines. The man is a sweet dude who just wants to make his fun car movies and collect a paycheck. I respect it but the dude is not a good actor. So it very well could be him, though I do feel like he has the most unnecessarily dramatic lines. “You made one mistake. You didn’t take my car” is the best/worst thing ever said in a movie, but it definitely sums up these movies pretty well.

I love living in a world where we can make non-fantasy movies that have absolutely no sense of logic, or physics. The fact that I just watched Dom Toretto take down two helicopters with his car is a lovely thing. I will say that at least the movie is aware of what it was. In a very self aware moment our new antagonist working for the agency says “If it defies the laws of god and physics they’ve done it twice”.

The movie spent a lot of time so obviously setting up the next one so this one built to a whole lot of nothing. There was a peak in conflict that looked like it was going to be the conflict of the movie and there was just no resolution to literally anything. We are told that basically the whole crew is dead, along with John Cena’s character but ya know we thought Lettie was dead for a while too so I’m not convinced. That said, they actually set up the next movie very well and the fact that I actively want to see where they go with this is very annoying.

I am fully convinced that Alan Ritchson was included in the cast because they needed someone to be bigger than Jason Momoa. Between the Rock, John Cena, Vin Diesel, Alan Ritchson and Jason Momoa this movie had all the biggest, buffest dudes in Hollywood. And between Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron, Brie Larson and Gal Gadot they had some of the hottest women in Hollywood and it was kind of awesome.

Now it was a Fast and Furious movie so let's not get confused, it was not a good movie. But it was highly entertaining and I spent the entire time laughing at the absolute ridiculousness of it. Jason Momoa absolutely carried the movie and honestly it's worth the watch just for him. Overall I’d give it a solid 5/10, I might watch it again but it was by no measure a good film.
