Facing up to the truth isn’t always easy.

Everybody’s Fine traveled into theaters in 2009. When his adult kids cancel their plans to come for a family reunion over the weekend, Frank, a retired widower, decides to surprise them all by embarking on a trip to visit each one individually.

Everybody’s Fine is one of the most realistic family films I have ever seen. It’s an emotional drama with a touch of humor. The film offers a compelling narrative that will resonate with audiences. Reflecting on the importance of communication in family, filmmakers effectively administer a heartfelt story through unique storytelling devices.

Frank learns more than he expected about himself and his children on this journey. As we learn, Frank has never been the most open person, making it hard for the kids to tell him about personal matters. Robert De Niro did a splendid job in the role, effectively conveying Frank's range of emotions from hope to disappointment.

Kate Beckinsale, Sam Rockwell, and Drew Barrymore did a superb job as Frank’s kids. I have seen all three of these actors in a variety of films and they each have outstanding depth and range. Rockwell, especially who I have become a big fan of over time. They each explored their character’s struggles and desires along with how it affects their relationships.

Frank’s interactions with each of his kids brim with genuine chemistry, authenticating the narrative. There are several poignant moments between the characters, but you know there’s a wall blocking them from their relationships. Admitting that they had an easier time talking with their mom. This opportunity is a chance for the family to regrow their bond.

The best scene in the film was a dream sequence where Frank has a conversation with his kids, but instead of the adult actors, they’re now the kid actors talking about serious issues. It’s a deep scene. This was genius directing in how Frank puts the lies from his kids together.

Road trips are my favorite. This film reminded me of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles since that’s how Frank traveled - Though he tried to avoid planes if he could. Frank travels from New York to Los Angeles to Denver and even Las Vegas. Travelers will enjoy this film since Frank explores several familiar areas.

The film’s cinematography beautifully captures the different cities Frank visits, and it also shows the dark elements of cities, too. Skillfully using visuals to reflect the characters' emotional states, the picturesque scenery indicates the characters' internal struggles. That also goes for the film’s soundtrack which enhances the film’s emotional impact.

Everybody’s Fine explores the complexities of family. In his direction, Kirk Jones reminds us that there are often unspoken issues and unfulfilled dreams in any family. There’s no such thing as a perfect family. Delivering the worst of news is not easy, but it’s not okay to hide news about personal life.

Jones used great techniques to showcase Frank’s kids talking to one another over the phone as Frank travels. Another favorite technical aspect was when the kid actors were shown in the same scene as the adult actors to equate how Frank will always see his kids as children.

The film is more emotional than you think, especially with the outcome of one of the family members. It also incorporates humor providing needed moments of relief from any tension. Also, remind yourself to forgive. Nobody should ever stay angry at anyone.

Everybody’s Fine had a good sense of humor and it evokes relatable emotions. I highly recommend Everybody’s Fine. Look as little as possible before watching this film.
