Anybody can play basketball so let’s show them!

Champions was released to theaters in 2023. When a former minor-league basketball coach is ordered by the court to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities, Marcus believes it to be a joke. The players open their minds, and together, they learn the true definition of what being a team means.

Champions is a prime example of teaching young adults with intellectual disabilities how to succeed. The movie is a sweet story but as most viewers noted, it could have been shorter, repeating lessons and prolonging the ending.

Woody Harrelson was the best choice for the role of Coach Marcus. Harrelson is already a versatile actor, but he captures the essence of a coach. Hesitant to take the job as he fears what it will do to his reputation, Marcus learns more than he expected. He does a great job working with the players, helping his team navigate tactics and their lives.

Champions is a heartfelt basketball movie that brings a refreshing twist to the genre by featuring actors with intellectual disabilities. They are the true stars of the movie. Their performances are remarkable, as they bring authenticity and sincerity to their characters and in their interactions. Each player’s growth is monumental.

Madison Tevlin was the standout. She was as sassy as ever but also helped the team become stronger players. To name a few others, Matt Cook, Kevin Iannucci, Ashton Gunning, and James Day Keith had memorable performances. They’re leaders to anyone who is struggling to make it in the world.

More credits include Kaitlin Olson, Ernie Husdon, Cheech Marin, and more memorable actors. Kaitlin Olson is a standout in the cast. Her scenes with Harrelson are filled with tension and a sense of unresolved history, adding a rather comedic layer to the film's narrative anytime they interact.

The story for Champions was drawn out. Sports films are not my forte but I like when they touch on the backstories of the players to make it more personal. There was no need for this film to be over two hours. Adding multiple storylines, the film's attempts to address different aspects of the players' lives dilute the overall impact of the film.

Some subplots felt rushed and underdeveloped. One other aspect of sports films that I wish films would stop with is when the story continues even after the team wins the final game. In Champions, the team has already won their games but the story continues adding more issues for the characters and setting the team apart.

Bobby Farrelly did a great job filming the basketball scenes. The cinematography and editing are excellent, capturing the energy and intensity of the basketball matches, and utilizing dynamic angles to immerse the audience in the action on the court.

Farrelly’s best attention went to the cast, ensuring that everyone had equal parts. We need more films like Champions that challenge societal perceptions, providing a platform for underrepresented voices to be heard.

The heart of Champions lies in its resonating messages highlighting the abilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Exploring themes of determination, teamwork, and inclusivity, the film delivers an important message about embracing diversity.

Watching this film made me smile. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are not capable of doing something. The main point of the film is that nobody should ever judge anyone before getting to know them. No matter the disability, we can challenge ourselves to do anything. Success comes in many forms.

Champions is an enjoyable film, especially for anyone who enjoys sports. It is streaming on Peacock.

Thank you for this thorough review, Marielle! I really enjoyed the movie, Harrelson was excellent in it. And I agree, the whole cast did a stellar job. Champions was partly film in Winnipeg, Canada, where I live. There are numerous issues with the way outdoor scenes were filmed. The timeline makes zero sense. One scene has snow, the next in the same location has none. The team should have been more careful about that.
