Delivery Man - A Movie Review
'Delivery Man' is a humorous movie that surprisingly carries a lot of heart.
Wait, I am about to meet how many of my biological children?
Delivery Man is a 2013 film. An affable underachiever discovers he was the father of 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. 142 of his children filed a lawsuit against him. It’s his decision whether he wants to come forward or hide.
It’s crazy how your opinions on movies or actors change over time. One of the best parts about movies is seeing your growth. Delivery Man is a humorous movie that surprisingly carries a lot of heart.
My opinion of Vince Vaughn has spanned a complete 180 over time. When he is cast in the right roles, Vaughn is a talented actor who does a remarkable job conveying his characters. David is by no means the definition of a perfect man, but finding all of his kids changes things.
Vaughn was superb in the role, studying emotions and connecting with the other actors. He skillfully captures the essence of a man grappling with the weight of responsibility and the desire for connection.
While Delivery Man primarily focuses on David's journey, the supporting cast also shines in their respective roles. This is another comedy that has an unrecognizable appearance by Chris Pratt as David’s lawyer friend, Brett. He should be considered for more comedy roles instead of being typecast as the generic hero.
Cobie Smulders's role should not go unnoticed. Delivering a strong performance as David's expecting girlfriend, Emma, she doesn’t believe that he has what it takes to be a dad. Smulders and Vaughn were great in their scenes, especially one crucial scene in the climax.
Casting 500+ actors in the roles of David’s kids, no part went unnoticed. While some had a supporting role, others were still given the opportunity to appear in the background. The writers did a good job of giving screen time to each actor involved. One of the most genuine aspects of the movie is the chemistry between Vaughn and the young actors portraying his offspring.
A lot of humorous, but mostly heartwarming moments happen. One random act of kindness can impact someone’s life. This was my favorite segment of the film. A few examples of David’s kindness include covering for a shift, saving another from a drug overdose, and visiting one of his kids who is mentally handicapped.
More storylines could have been explored but then again you can only do so much when 500+ characters are involved in the narrative. I also feel that the film missed an opportunity to discuss the moral complexities of sperm donation and the real effect it has had on each of David’s kids.
Director and also the writer of Delivery Man, Ken Scott explores the underlying theme of family. There is not just one definition of what ‘family’ entails. Navigating the complexities of paternal responsibilities creates a cohesive narrative exploring themes like self-discovery, family, and our choices.
Delivery Man presents a unique and intriguing concept in a heartfelt and comedic manner. This is also a really funny movie. The comedic and dramatic tones of the film are adeptly balanced, blending laughter and heartfelt moments.
I wasn’t expecting the emotional depth of the film. Overall, Delivery Man offers a charming and heartfelt viewing experience exploring unconventional family dynamics, providing both laughter and poignant moments that leave a lasting impression.
Delivery Man surprised me. I am glad I took a chance on this movie, especially for Vaughn’s performance. Look into Delivery Man if you’re looking for a new comedy. It doesn’t disappoint.
