Charles Xavier is Awful - Here's Why

One of the most popular mutants in X-Men comics isn't exactly a decent person for many reasons

By M.N. NegusPublished 2 years ago 4 min read

Many fans of Marvel know all about Professor X. He's the leader of the X-Men, advocate for mutant rights, and surrogate father to many young mutants who trained under him. On the surface, it seems like he's a great guy. However, if you were to take a closer look at his character, you'll begin to notice that he's not as much of a saint as many make him out to be.

It doesn't matter if you follow the comics or the many movies that Fox has made about them. There's so much about him that makes him one of the worst characters in Marvel Comics.

Now, I may be a bit biased, especially since I personally harbor a lot of intolerance for this guy. I even wrote some articles on CBR slandering him (which I'll include in the article if you wish to read those). If you aren't quite caught up within the comic book universe, watch out!

1. He's a TERRIBLE Teacher

Yes, yes, we all know that Charles loves recruiting young and vulnerable kids who've just discovered their abilities into his crusade for "mutant peace". It's only natural for some of these characters, like Wolverine and Cyclops, to view him as a surrogate father or role model of sorts. While this is fine and dandy, it doesn't excuse him for his actions against these kids.

The two characters that are most loyal to him are Cyclops and Wolverine. Despite the bond these characters share with the powerful telepath, Xavier may not feel the same way. He completely disregards their feelings and emotions in favor of having his best soldiers ready to fight for his cause.

Before the island of Krakoa was a peaceful paradise, it was actually a dangerous place to be. After the first team of X-Men was defeated by the island, a second team, lead by Moira McTaggart, was tasked to extract them. On this team was Gabriel Summers, also known as Vulcan and Scott's youngest brother. Unfortunately, this team was killed in combat.

Instead of offering comfort to his supposed surrogate son, Charles went a different route. He used his powerful telepathic abilities to not only erase the team's presence on the island, but to erase any traces of his brother from Scott's mind, making him forget that Gabriel existed in the first place!

Don't get me started on how he treats Wolverine. I could go on and on about how frustrating it is to watch Logan serve at Xavier's side. Instead, I'll link one of my articles I wrote on CBR explaining why Charles Xavier is No Better Than the Canadian Government.

There is one student who he seems to have an actual bond with (if you even want to call it that), and that's with Jean Grey. From a young age, Jean showed exceptional skills as a telepath and even possessed telekinetic abilities. This impressed Xavier, and he recruited her.

He taught Jean how to use powers, but because Charles always used his powers willy nilly with no regards for anyone else, Jean picked up on these habits and also uses her powers in the same fashion. Through the mentorship, Xavier even began to have romantic feelings for Jean! This is not only unprofessional, but it's SUPER CREEPY!

As surprising as it may sound, Xavier is actually a father of two. He has a son named David Haller, aka Legion, and a daughter named Xandra, who actually rules the Shi'ar Empire.

While Xandra is off ruling an alien empire, his son has created a pocket reality in his own mind, and plans to succeed where his father failed. David is determined not to turn out like his estranged father (who hardly regards him as a son). Despite how awful Charles treats him, David doesn't harbor any ill will towards him.

Charles barely speaks to his children, and doesn't even have any bonds with them. He'd rather put his cause before nurturing a relationship with his kids. It's his loss. Xandra is a strong-willed ruler and David is a decent guy, just trying to do the right thing.

This post mostly turned into a rant where I could explain why Xavier is awful, and I'll take any opportunity to convey that, whether it's an article on CBR or a rant on Vocal. All will know (and hopefully agree) of my deep hatred for Charles as a character. Do you think he's a bad character? Who's your least favorite X-Man? Comment below! I love listening to everyone's opinions!
