Anime Review

Never giving up on your dreams, is the premise of Black Clover's empowering story. The series follows Asta and Yuno, two underdog heroes on a heartfelt journey to becoming, The Wizard King. Although flawed, the first season of the Black Clover anime lays a solid groundwork of introducing us to the Clover Kingdom. This season of the series proves to have potential in being a great anime.

Based on the fantasy manga created by Yuki Tabata, two orphan boys named, Asta and Yuno are the center of the plot of Black Clover. In a world filled with magic, Yuno possess enormous magical abilities. However, Asta doesn't appear to posses any magical abilities, which is very uncommon in the magical world of Clover Kingdom. Although, I'm sure we will see his hidden magical power later in the series.

Immediately we are shown a clear sense of the contrasting personalities between Asta and Yuno, with a brief and effective flashback. Yuno is portray as calm, sedate, and intelligent. While Asta is portray as outgoing, overly obnoxious and carefree. Even though Asta may seem dumb, he is shown through the progression of series that he can be quite intelligent.

The constant yelling and obnoxiousness of Asta, can be quite annoying and off-putting for viewer and especially for other characters of the anime show. Spited this personality trait, you will found yourself rooting and defining with Asta, because of his orphan background and underdog status as a person without any magical abilities in a world where magic is the normal. Asta's best trait, is his inspiring devotion of never giving up, even when he didn't at first receive a grimoire or was pick by the captains. He still never have up on his dreams of becoming The Wizard King.

Another great aspect of Asta character, is how he doesn't look at Yuno with any resentment or jealous, because of Yuno being naturally gifted with magical talent. In the flashback scene, a young Yuno is attack by a drunk man. Asta at the last minute save Yuno from the drunken fiend. From this moment on, Yuno vows to study magic and become powerful to pay back the debt he owes to Asta for saving his life. Yuno also has the ambition to become The Wizard King, causing the two hero to have a friendly and supportive rivalry.

The visuals of the Black Clover, are what you would be find in your typical action anime. Some of the backgrounds, special effects, and battle scenes are quite stunning. There are also some interesting camera work that give the viewer a cinematic acton to the battle scenes. The character designs is where the anime series I believe is lacking. There are some interesting designs, unfortunately many of the characters are design in generic style. First time looking at most characters, especially Asta, the viewer can easily tell the characters’ personalities before even watching the anime.

The story of Black Clover is hardly the most original one, at least based solely off the anime. The series does take elements from other poplar anime like, Bleach, Fairy Tail, My Hero Academia, to name a few. Although to be fair, those anime do also take elements from Dragon Ball Z and other anime. However, with its generic character designs and characters' backstories, the viewer may feel as though the anime is too predictable. As mention before I have only seen the first season of the anime and haven’t read any the manga yet. Hopefully, the Black Clover anime will come into its own, it definitely has promise of becoming a great anime.
