As we all know, Alex Kingston is well-known to the Doctor Who community as the wicked Professor River Song, also the daughter of Amy and Rory. Kingston first appeared on the long-running show back in 2008 in the episode 'Silence In The Library.' Ever since then, River Song has been cropping up all over the place, but not in sync with the Doctor's timeline.

After spending a twenty-four-year long night at the Singing Towers of Darillium, Kingston made her final appearance as River Song back in the 2015 Christmas Special "The Husbands Of River Song." Despite Kingston's final appearance fitting nicely in the chronological timeline created by Steven Moffat, Kingston is very keen to return to the science-fiction show in the next season, but it comes with a catch.

In the Season 6 finale "The Wedding Of River Song", fans witnessed the professor and Matt Smith's Doctor get married. Obviously, this is great news for fans that ship this couple, however, how well will this go down with the Thirteenth Doctor being a woman?

Well, Kingston has spoken about the controversial casting of the new Doctor, who is Jodie Whittaker, the show's first ever female Doctor, and you may be surprised by Kingston's thoughts and why she wants to return to gripping BBC series. Speaking about meeting her "second wife", Kingston said:

"I think River would just take her in her arms and give her a big kiss. I think it would be fantastic. It'd be great fun to explore that possibility, particularly now that the Doctor is going to regenerate into a female form."

Even though River's story technically came to a close in 2015, what's to say the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall, hasn't already planned a return of the big-haired professor?

Kingston has also revealed that she hopes the new writers for Doctor Who 'explore other potentials' for the new companions in Season 11, which will hopefully include River amongst all the new exciting adventures to come.

"If you're going to do that, why not explore other potentials in terms of his relationships with former, well not former companions because River was never a companion, but people who have been in his life in the past, or her life? So yeah, let's wait and see."

With all of that said, many fans will be questioning how exactly can River return to Doctor Who when really her story has finished now. Well, the solution is quite simple; River has a Vortex Manipulator, meaning she can quickly jump between dates and times to come face-to-face with Whittaker's Doctor.

"After all, when she lifts up her diary and all the incarnations flutter out, there are one or two spaces. So I think it'd be great if she met with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor."

Even though Kingston's return seems highly unlikely at the moment, River Song is returning to the Doctor Who universe with another audio series with Big Finish Productions. "The Diary of River Song" will continue for what has been confirmed at least another three series.

In past series with Big Finish, River Song has had adventures with the Sixth, Seventh and the Eighth Doctor, for what were gripping stories. Whilst details of Series 2 of the stories remain confidential, Big Finish has teased fans by saying:

"Having encountered the Doctor’s Sixth and Seventh incarnations in Series Two, and the Eighth in Series One, River Song will be brushing past a couple more Doctors in her future. Let’s hope she doesn’t trip over any long scarves..."

Series 2 of the epic adventures will be released to the world in January 2018, where she will team up with Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor to battle the terrifying midwife, Madame Kovarian, who took Amy and Rory's daughter away from them in Season 6 of the television show.

The new series of "The Diary Of River Song" will be made up of four one-hour long adventures where River will 'face demons of her past, present and future.'

Jodie Whittaker will make her debut as the Doctor this Christmas when Peter Capaldi will bow out the show. Whereas, Alex Kingston will return to Big Finish in January. Are you hoping River Song will meet the Thirteenth Doctor?
