Movie producers and other celebrities join in.

July 3, 2020 was supposed to be a happy day for Nollywood beloved actress, Adesua Etomi Wellington. The 2019 blockbuster movie, Sugar Rush, which she starred in alongside co-stars Bisola Aiyeola and Bimbo Ademoye finally landed on the streaming platform, Netflix.

Within hours, thousands and thousands of Nigerians had watched the movie and as a result, thousands and thousands of Nigerians had opinions.

Very quickly, Adesua started trending on the Internet. People were calling her acting our for being "bad", "one note", "too basic". She was the number 1 trend on Twitter on Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout that time, she didn't address the criticisms. Until now.

Scroll on to read first of all what her peers and other people in the field had to say about the criticisms and then we'll talk about what Adesua herself had to say.

Uduak Isong Reacts

Uduak Isong is a top Nollywood screenwriter, director, and film producer. She has been responsible for movies like The Department, Falling, Lost in London, and very notably for Adesua's breakout movie, Knocking on Heaven's Door.

A lot of people attributed Adesua's success to her light-skin and so in defense of the actress, Uduak took to Twitter to explain WHY she actually cast Adesua in the movie that made her who she is today, as well as explain why Adesua has gotten so successful.

Uduak wrote:

Since we are talking about Adesua, let me tell U guys how she landed the lead role in Knocking On Heaven's Door bc it looks like when pple,s hard work starts to pay off, some of U start to get angry and aggrieved. U tell urself they don't deserve it and find ways to invalidate it

We auditioned over 500 Pple but didn't really finding what we were lookng 4, eventually we settled on SO bt Emem wasn't completely satisfied so she remembered this young lady who'd sent her and email and called her in for an audition and was like, I'm going to go with her.

It was her 1st lead so there were struggles but Desmond is a great actor's director so he brought the best out of her. I liked her, her work ethic, talent so when I started to think about Falling, I thought of her. Then AMVCA happened and it just went upwards for her from there.

But as I've said many times we don't know how to nurture. We don't really care about someone's process. That's why we liked Hushpuppy and are now feigning surprise that he was a fraudster, no, he was a farmer. Do you think he just dropped from the sky as a rich man?

I refuse to let U pple deflect as U often do. This conversation is abt a woman attributing another woman's success to colourism and favouritism. At a time where we are fighting for better representation and acknowledgement of women's efforts. We shld all collectively condemn it!

Blessing Egbe Reacts

Another movie producer, Blessing Egbe, popular for producing television series Lekki Wives and movie, The Women also put her two cents in about actors and colorism in the industry.

She said:

Comparing actors only go to show how naive people are about the ART. Actors all bring different substance to the table and NO two can and should act same way to a given situation. Sometimes it is the story or the work of a good director that make an actor shine in a role.

if u've ever loved an actor in any movie atall. It simply means d person has got it & or was directed well. If you dont like the same actor in another picture, perhaps d director didnt push d actor enough or the casting was off. Sometimes actors come unprepared to set and ...i

It is the job of the director to DIRECT the actor into becoming the character the script writer intended. This is why sometimes your favourite lose out on an award, not because they CANT act but because they didnt quite pull off the character in the movie up for nomination.

In time past. Actors had time to put in their hearts and souls into a role. They were allowed to INMERSE themselves into a character and deliver same because most were in it for the love of the ART. These days, people join the industry for odd reasons, fame, to make quick bucks.

Actors jump from sets to sets and sometimes mix up characters because producers line up to use them. Everything is now upside down now in nollywood & audiences are beginning to get tired of it. In a way, it is good. Perhaps this will make us sit up and begin to do things right.

Kate Henshaw, Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke, Uche jumbo, Uche Osotule, Ini Edo, Tina Mba, Ireti Doyle, Ufuoma McDermott, Mercy Johnson, Yvonne Jegede & many more are all dark skinned top actors so the issue of skin colour should not even come into play in this matter at all

Adesua Etomi Reacts

For most of the time when she was getting bashed, Adesua didn't say a word. This is a woman who is known for living a very private life and is very hardly in the news for controversy.

In response to the backlash, Adesua Etomi took to her Twitter to write:

Beautifully said. She didn't look at the critics or the noise, she simply gave gratitude for even having the opportunity to act.

On Instagram though, she was a little bit more direct. She reposted some people's encouraging posts to her Instagram story with nice words attached to each. Here are a couple of those:

She saw all the hate but she decided to focus only on God and gratitude, and the people who sent her positivity. I think that is an EXPERT way of reacting to this kind of backlash.

That's All.
