'About Fate' is similar to romance films, but it is a charming story.

Do you think our meeting has anything to do with fate?

About Fate is a 2022 film. Margot and Griffin, two strangers are drawn together by fate. Each sharing complicated relationship dilemmas, Margot asks Griffin for a favor to be her date at her sister’s wedding. Will the night go as planned that’s the question.

About Fate is your average romance movie where the couple falls in love in one day. Finding original material, the film is funny in its inventive storytelling and characters. Although it has a worthy message about taking chances the ending is not the right conclusion.

Emma Roberts has been typecast in similar roles in three romance films. However, Roberts finds new characteristics to work with for each part. Margot is not the most responsible person. She learns two lessons about responsibility and making love work.

Margot and Griffin made a great team. The movie is a typical romantic comedy, but what makes it stand out is the charming chemistry between Roberts and Mann. Their interactions are filled with witty banter and playful teasing which keeps the movie entertaining. Sharing things in common, they have their own romantic affairs going on.

About Fate incorporates a good cast of supporting actors who are the highlight of the film. Credits include Lewis Kip, Britt Robertson, Cheryl Hines, Paula Plum, Chris Everett, and Ken Cheeseman. I enjoyed watching their scenes, especially their interactions.

Compiling an amusing variety of characters, most fell under the typical wedding family tropes, like the fighting siblings or one family member who is critical about things. Interactions are acted well between the characters, especially the sibling drama between Margot and her sister.

Once the film moved out of the usual typical romantic film tropes, the scenarios are funny the more Margot and Griffin stalled in their journey to get to the wedding. They go so far as to break into the closed dress shop to retrieve Margot’s sister’s dress. And Griffin leaves money as an apology.

The plot of the movie is predictable, but it is executed well. About Fate does not take itself too seriously and plays with the idea of fate in a lighthearted way. Exploring themes of fate and the idea that some things are meant to be, in my opinion, was the film’s downfall.

Fans of the show Riverdale will recognize Madelaine Petsche, playing a similar character here as William’s girlfriend, Clementine. Before you make any assumptions regarding Clementine’s snobbish behavior, there’s more to her character than one thinks.

Aren’t you tired of the main character breaking up with their longtime partner to be with the person they’ve only known for a day? The ending of About Fate makes an unexpected change to this trope.

Marius Vaysberg avoided the usual ending where two strangers fall in love and decide to be with one another after a full day. While I am glad that one of the duo comes to their senses about not taking the relationship to full extremes since they hardly know each other, that’s all ignored in the final scene.

Bringing Clementine back to voice her opinion Margot is guilty of pulling Griffin away from his relationship. Choosing to do the right thing, Margot ends things. But, the next day, they end up at the same restaurant for breakfast. Without any words and just fate being the explanation, they get back together like nothing ever happened.

About Fate is similar to romance films, but it is a charming film with some laughs and a feel-good message. Take a look at About Fate on Prime.
