5 movies with great script twists in science fiction

There are certainly many ways to catch the audience's attention when it comes to making a movie or a series. Normally, that a plot catches you by how well it is realized or how well tied its relationships are can be determinant to mark an entire community, being the science fiction genre one that tends to get it quite often. You have to think that it is a reinvention of the reality we know or a creation of new universes, so it ends up being the most striking way to escape.

The following films have the science fiction genre as a standard, as they have been a before and after. However, in addition to its imaginary, they have also been a turning point for bringing us the most striking plot twists and that many have meant enough to stay. I am going to comment on the films with spoilers, commenting on the twist that made them so famous.

Planet of the Apes

Year: 1968

Synopsis: George Taylor is part of a crew of astronauts aboard a spaceship - on a long-duration mission - that crashes on an unknown planet apparently devoid of intelligent life. However, he soon learns that the place is ruled by a race of intelligent apes who enslave the humans, who lack the faculty of speech. When their leader, Dr. Zaius, discovers to his horror Taylor's faculty of speech, he decides it is best to exterminate him.

Plot twist: If you are one of those who started watching this saga for the last reinterpretations you will have lost interest in the twist that takes place in the plot, but we have to remember that for this third installment, this happens at the end. Basically, the whole story that takes place in the film, believing that it is on a planet far from Earth, it turns out that it is not so, that everything was happening on the planet of our protagonist, being all a conquest by the primates.

The Matrix

Year: 1999

Synopsis: Thomas Anderson leads a double life: by day he is a programmer in an important software company, and by night a computer hacker named Neo. His life will never be the same again when mysterious characters invite him to discover the answer to the question that keeps him awake at night: what is the Matrix?

Screenplay twist: This is considered an open secret, as it is the main premise of this movie, but when it was released it was pretty groundbreaking. What happens with this script twist is that it happens tremendously early, as with the first film of the saga is obtained and the fact that it is known that everything is a simulation and that reality is a fiction left to us by the machines, surely broke the head of more than one.

The Thing

Year: 1982

Synopsis: In an experimental station in Antarctica, a team of researchers discovers a strange entity from space, which according to all indications has remained buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. When it thaws, it undergoes a surprising metamorphosis...

Screenplay twist: In this case we are joining two of the most interesting genres in cinema, science fiction and horror. This film followed in the wake of some others that tried to unify the same and its script twist would make us wait until the end of it, since at all times we are waiting to know who is the host of the terrible threat. At the end of the road it is observed that one of the members who seemed missing is still alive and gives us to think in a thrilling ending that leaves the door half-open to know if he is the bearer of the monster or Kurt Russell himself.

The Mist

Year: 2007

Synopsis: In a small town in Maine, a violent storm suddenly breaks out and ends as abruptly as it began. Then a thick fog rolls in and enters homes and supermarkets, trapping and killing all who are enveloped by the darkness.

Screenplay twist: We cross head-on with a story by the great writer Stephen King, one of the greats when it comes to science fiction or horror in literature. This film, which would pass without shame or glory, presents a very interesting twist in its ending. The protagonist has a few bullets and sees that there is no way out of the fog, so he kills all his companions, including his son, and decides to jump into the fog, to discover that the army has just arrived to get them out of there. Shocking, isn't it?

Moon

Year: 2009

Synopsis: The film tells the story of Sam Bell, an astronaut who is nearing the end of his contract with Lunar, the company he has worked for for three years living on Selene, a lunar base from which he has been extracting gas from the Helium 3 mine, because of the terrible energy crisis that the Earth is going through. Two weeks before his return home to his wife and daughter, Sam begins to have strange visions and to feel strange, but it is not until the arrival of his replacements that Sam sees his suspicions as to Lunar's true purposes come true, for more than just his contract is soon to expire.

Screenplay twists: This film is Duncan Jones' first work as a director, which wanted to become tremendously transcendental with its ending. Being a film that comes to reflect on humanity and its space within creation and the universe, when its final moments arrive, viewers, due to the events that occur, will come to wonder if what they have seen in the film is entirely true or not, making it take many reinterpretations.
