1. American Honey

This film is beautifully insightful. It’s so relatable to the point of it giving you that type of nostalgia that you never particularly had growing up. This Drama is about a young girl trying to find her sense of belonging in this complicated world. She experiences the tribulations of a relationship, close bonds to strangers from all walks of life while appreciating the summer vibes and the chilled nights. What makes it extra special, is that the majority of the cast were just picked randomly from streets, beaches and construction sites. A lot of them didn’t have any prior acting experience so as you can imagine, there's a lot of improvisation. I guess that’s what makes the film feel even more “real.” The only well known actors would include Shia LaBeouf who puts on an incredible performance and Danielle Riley Keough who does a great deal of playing quite the… cow to put it nicely. I know that the majority of us are under self-isolation right now, but what better way to motivate you to start planning meaningful, fun packed trips once the dust has settled?! This film will prompt you to do just that!

2. Contagion

What’s insane is that It’s eerily similar to what we are going through now; wouldn’t you say that this whole situation is so unreal that it feels rather movie-like? This Sci-Fi is about a virus that started off in China by an animal and brought to the US by American citizens who consumed the food. The virus is deadly, killing nearly everyone in it’s way and it becomes a global pandemic… just like the coronavirus! Everything that is happening now, is exactly what happens in the film just worse! I guess the only difference is that we get to see it through celebrities’ eyes. Yes there's an ensemble cast with the likes of Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Marion Cotillard playing the Doctors, Matt Damon playing your everyday husband with Gyweth paltrow as his wife, being the “working mom” who was one of the first to get the virus during her travel to China. The film takes you through their efforts to try and contain the virus, aiding the people that have it, figure out how this whole pandemic even came about and of course, conspiracy theories relating to the pandemic. I’m sure that there’s a conspiracy theory for almost anything and everything. It’s an eye-opener for sure and I personally think that this film will urge everyone to take the correct precautions, stay indoors and wait for this to get better… because it will.

3. Kill the Irishman

Since we’re going through our most vulnerable time right now, what better way to feel invincible by watching this Crime drama! The story outlines the life of Irish American mobster, Danny Greene who escaped numerous assassination attempts by Italian mobsters, on his life. He even survived being blown up by a bomb that detonated in his house! This true crime film has so many killings, bombings, twists and turns, it’s almost literally, unbelieveable and this is what makes it so intriguing to watch because the film backs up every event with real-life news clips and interviews with Danny himself. To sum this up, if you’re looking for a film that gives you your nightly high dosage of adrenaline, this is definitely it!

4. The Ballad of Jack and Rose

Now this is the type of film that makes you appreciate being around your family. I don’t know about you, but my family can get on my nerves at the best of times so it doesn’t help that I’m stuck with them indefinitely during this lockdown but I wouldn’t have it any other way. There's never a dull day in my household and it’s nice being able to share this experience with them. You have to look on the bright side of everything; it gives us a chance to create more memories together and build a stronger bond with one another and this is what this coming-of-age drama makes you aware of. This film is about an environmentalist named Jack (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) and his daughter Rose (played by Camilla Belle) who live on an isolated island that developers are intending to build on. While they fight to keep the place they call home, Jack begins to crave contact with people other than his daughter. When he finds someone that he’s compatible with, he invites her and his two sons to live with him and Rose, who doesn't quite approve… This is when the family dynamics shift and things get rather eventful to say the least! What I like about this film is that it takes you through the highs and lows of family relationships in various situations. It also shines light on how important it is to be your own person even if your fellow loved ones don't quite approve of the choices you make in life. Give it a watch! Preferably with family!

5. The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman

If you ever thought that your past relationships were complex, wait until you see this one! This rom-com/drama follows American tourist Charlie Countryman (yes, played by my guy Shia LaBeouf) who after recently losing his mother, travels around Romania taking in all the sites, mingling with fellow tourists and citizens while dabbling in a few… let’s just say he was having a cloud nine type of experience! What he didn’t expect was to fall in love with a young lady named Gabriella (played by Evan Rachel Wood) while on his travels. They really hit it off and admire each other greatly but there’s a catch of course I mean, no love story is ever that straightforward right? She happens to be the estranged wife of Nigel (played by Mads Mikkelsen) a violent Romanian gangster who happens to find out about his wife’s love interest and will stop at anything, to see Charlie Countryman dead! The only thing is, Charlie won’t go down without a fight. In the words of myself “whoever lets the person they loved go, clearly didn’t fight for it. Whoever said it was life, clearly didn't try at it.” I guess this is the type of film that makes you realise how trashy your exes were for letting you go so easily. Maybe then, they won’t seem like such a loss to you and if they try to contact you now that they're all alone during quarantine, suggest this film to them, tell them they weren't “ride or die” and BLOCK!

You’re welcome ;) stay safe out there! X
