Yes, ‘tis her.

Victorian teenage detective Enola Holmes, lively and engaging as ever, is back on Netflix in the much-anticipated sequel, Enola Holmes 2.

This time, the younger sister (Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown) of famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes (The Witcher’s Henry Cavill) has started her own detective agency and her first case is to find a missing match factory girl. From working in a matchstick factory to dancing at a high society ball, the 16-year-old soon finds herself having to face more challenges than she bargained for.

Based on the Enola Holmes Mysteries (2006-2021) novels by author Nancy Springer, the sequel’s premise is not from the books but an original story by screenwriter Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials) and inspired by a true British historical event, the 1888 London matchgirls’ strike.

Just likes its 2020 predecessor, Enola Holmes 2 boasts fast-paced action, excellent production values, and most of all, stirring performances.

Of the returning cast members: Cavill still makes for a captivating Sherlock, Helena Bonham-Carter (The Crown) is hilarious as before as the suffragist Holmes mother, while Louis Partridge (Pistol) still cuts a dashing figure as Enola’s main squeeze, Viscount Tewkesbury. The star attraction however, is by no doubt the mesmerizing Brown with her impeccable comic timing and effervescent demeanor.

Though not quite as groundbreaking as the original film, Enola Holmes 2 is nonetheless fun, absorbing and entertaining. Add to that, it has a number of great lines that could serve as good life advice. Here are but 10 of these inspirational quotes:

10 ‘Enola Holmes 2’ Quotes That Serve As Good Life Advice

1. “That’s a tip. You should probably write that down.”

—Sherlock Holmes to Enola Holmes, after giving the latter what he thinks is a good piece of advice. Very good advice especially if you have a tendency to forget things or vital information given to you.

2. “Nothing’s certain until it’s proven.”

—Sherlock to Enola again, after his sister expresses disgust that he actually checked if she did indeed left her fingerprints on a murder weapon. In today’s world of fake news and tampered images, it is always advisable to check and be certain of all the facts before taking things at face value.

3. “Don’t be so desperate to prove yourself.”

—Sherlock to Enola, after guessing correctly that the aspiring sleuth had placed herself in a dangerous situation while trying to solve her case. A good reminder to not trap ourselves in stressful, unhappy or unpleasant situations just to prove what we may be capable of, be it in the workplace or a relationship.

4. “Too many people make it their sole purpose in life to fit into the world around them. This is a mistake.”

—Eudoria Holmes to a pre-teen Enola (Sofia Stavrinou), advising the latter to stay true to herself and follow her own path even if she stumbles and falls while doing so. While it is good to blend in with society, it is also important that you march to the beat of your own drum.

5. “Find your allies, work with them and you will become more of who you are.”

—Eudoria to teenage Enola, advising her headstrong daughter that though it is good to be independent, she might attain higher heights by working with like-minded people like her “silly (but accountable) boy”, Lord Tewkesbury. Some things we can do on our own, but for some cases, more heads are better than one.

6. “Those who can turn to others when they are in need are truly brave amongst us.”

—Edith (Susan Wokoma) to Sherlock, when the latter asks the ju-jitsu-trained suffragist for help in rescuing Enola from being sent to the gallows. Fear or pride often stops us from asking for help from others, but if we pluck up the courage or lower our ego to do so, it could lead us to the solutions that we need for a problem or dire situation.

7. “Don’t believe all you read.”

—Viscount Tewkesbury to Enola, after the latter remarks that he is often touted as an eligible bachelor in the dailies’ society pages. In the era of social media and misinformation, this perennial advice is more relevant than ever.

8. “You have let your emotions get the better of you.”

—Sherlock to Enola, after realizing that his sympathetic sister ends up becoming a murder suspect by being too emotional in wanting to help her client find her sister. It’s good to have empathy but not if it gets you into undesirable trouble that you can't easily get out of.

9. “It only takes a little flame to start a fire…”

—Superintendent Grail (David Thewlis) to Enola, taunting the aspiring detective of how her investigative actions force him to harass matchgirl Bessie (Serrana Su-Ling Bliss) for information on her missing sister. A spark that starts a fire may either lead to a whole lot of good or a series of unwanted outcomes. Thus, it’s wise to first think about what all the possible scenarios could be before one carries out a game-changing action.

10. “No one should be alone all the time. A friend would do you well.”

—Enola to Sherlock, advising her reclusive brother that perhaps it will be good for him to have a flatmate who can help him keep his house (and affairs) in order. There’s nothing wrong in living alone or being alone, but having a friend (if not more) whom you can call upon for assistance of any kind is nothing but a good thing.

Enola Holmes and Enola Holmes 2 are streaming exclusively on Netflix.
