Meaning of the gaming terms "buff" and "nerf"

Anyone who has delved into their favourite video game's online forums has most likely found fans pleading with developers to "PLS NERF" a character they believe is overpowered or moaning about a buff that they believe has rendered an enemy virtually unbeatable.

It's a cycle that game developers have had to deal with for more than two decades, and the rising popularity of DLC materials and games as services has made nerfing and buffing more common than ever.

However, the terms "nerfing" and "buffing" were popularised in the early days of the internet, owing partly to a few of the first released massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG).

The origin of the word "buff" in gaming

Multiple participants on the Gaming Stack Exchange site said they first introduced the word "buff" in games like Anarchy Online and Everquest in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

However, the term "buff" had a slightly different meaning back then.

It was generally used to describe transient increases in players' offensive or defensive capabilities, rather than overall balance changes. In this sense, the opposite of buff is "debuff," which is essentially a curse or detrimental spell meant to slow foes or cause damage over time.

"There was a low-level spell that raised the strength stat. When the magic was cast, a symbol of a large, bulging bicep appeared on your screen," user170066 of Gaming Stack Exchange wrote. "During the first few weeks after the game's debut, several players shouted 'I will buff you up' or anything along those lines while casting it... When I heard the term "debuff," I was referring to spells that reduced something's fighting stats."

Buffs are usually used by spellcasting classes to augment their next attack or heal their teammates.

The phrase is widely perceived as a pun on the original slang definition of buff: to be muscular. Because buff was already linked with transient increases, employing it to represent more permanent enhancements was a natural progression.

Anarchy Online players utilised the updated definition of buff online as early as 2001, but there does not appear to be a single incident that caused the word to be accepted by gamers in the same way that nerfed was.

Nonetheless, both terms arose from the necessity for a concise manner to express the continuous balancing adjustments of competitive online games. So, the next time your favourite Overwatch hero is nerfed or your League of Legends main's enhancements are underwhelming, remember the old-school players who had to pay a new disc or cartridge to get those kinds of improvements.

Meaning of "Buffs"

Buffs are any enhancements to an existing element's efficacy or desirability, such as Health, Damage, Range, or any number of other enhancements.

Players may refer to game aspects that have been boosted in-game, via perks or other pickups, or that have been buffed in the meta via game patch updates.

In various video games, particularly MMORPGs and MUDs, buffs are used to explain improvements in the power of a game element.

There are two main meaning of the term "buff" in gaming

The first refers to a permanent (or at least indefinite) increase in power levels as a result of changes to game mechanics, typically in the pursuit of game balance. In this context, buff is the inverse of nerf.

The second meaning of buff is an effect (typically thrown as a spell) that briefly improves a player or target region.

Meaning of "Nerf"

Nerf is a term used to describe a change to a game that reduces the appeal or effectiveness of a specific game element. Nerfs can be applied to abilities, talents, characters, and maps.

Nerfs are designed to bring the effected element into better alignment with the game's meta, or to make things less powerful. The term can also be used as a verb to describe the act of changing something.

Buff (in one of the two senses of the term) is the polar opposite of nerf. The term was coined by Ultima Online to describe the Nerf brand of soft toys that are less likely to cause serious injury. It originated in the context of virtual worlds like MMORPGs (like UO) and MUDs, but it has since become part of the general vocabulary of gamer slang and can be found in a variety of places where power levels are adjusted from one game version to the next.
