The original PlayStation (PSX) was released in 1995, yet almost 30 years later we’re still seeing games being released due to a dedicated community of talented fans working on their own projects. The latest to catch my eye is Twin Peaks: Into the Night, based upon the David Lynch/Mark Frost created TV show, that first graced our screens back in 1990 and which is being developed by the French based Blue Rose Team.

The original show may have only lasted two seasons but retains a passionate cult following of fans who fell in love with its blend of metaphysical horror and quirky characters. It’s influence on television & cinema is an essay in itself and its brief return in 2017 was met with critical applause and is some of the best television that this humble writer has ever seen.

The show was based around the murder of Laura Palmer, a 17-year-old high school girl who was found dead in a lake, wrapped in plastic in the sleepy suburban town of Twin Peaks.

Tasked with solving the mystery, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (played by Kyle MacLachlan) is on the case, meeting the various weird and wonderful inhabitants of Twin Peaks and realising that this seemingly idyllic little town holds many deep dark secrets. Part mystery and part soap opera, shrouded with Lynch’s trademark surrealism, and with the late Angelo Badalamenti's timeless score, it was in equal parts terrifying as it was hilarious and heartwarming. In other words, it was bat shit crazy and I for one absolutely love it.

Twin Peaks: Into the Night follows the first season of the show, so expect to see plenty of familiar faces such as the Log Lady (a woman who literally carries and relays messages from…a log), Bob (a creepy unknown supernatural entity) and the Man from Another Place (a 4ft guy in a red suit who speaks backwards) as you retrace Special Agent Dale Cooper’s steps amongst the Douglas Fir pine trees and into the infamous extradimensional Red Room.

Judging by the trailer, the gameplay seems to take influence from the likes of survival horror classics such as the original Resident Evil, Silent Hill & Parasite Eve and fans of those games will definitely be able to see the similarities.

The original PlayStation was one of my favourite consoles of all time and my introduction to 3D gaming. It’s incredibly nostalgic to see these types of graphics once again, and based on the trailer it feels like the Blue Rose Team have captured the feel of a PSX game perfectly, as well as the vibe of the truly iconic TV show.

Cooper is always keeping Diane informed.

Now, this title might initially only appeal to fans of the show but if you're a fan of retro gaming or wanting to scratch that original PlayStation gaming itch, then this might also be the game for you!

If it’s anything like the show, then you’re in for a truly wild (if not bizarre) ride.

So, grab a cup of damn fine coffee, a slice of pie and check out this latest 90’s inspired release.

You've gotta love that classic box art

The original PlayStation remains one of my favourite consoles of all time, it’s what really kickstarted my love for gaming and took my obsession to a whole new level. You can read about my love affair with that console and my brief foray into piracy in another article here.
