Catching a butterfly in Hokko Life!

Have you ever binge played the Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing games as a kid? Are you really into virtual farming simulators? Then I have five very enjoyable games that you need to look into right now!

1. Hokko Life

Unique animal villagers, randomized village maps, and various in-game items to collect, I present you, Hokko Life. The game's sole creator is Robert Tatnell! Props to him for all his efforts!

  • Honorable mention; this is an LGBTQIA+ friendly game, your character will not be tied down by any gender-specific terms. The NPCs will refer to you and the villagers as they/them. All clothing, accessories, and hairstyles will be inclusive.

Once you click start game and finish navigating the cute options for your player, a cutscene will begin... hmm... does something seem nostalgically familiar here or, is it just me?

When you wake up from a much-needed nap on the train, you arrive in a quiet, barren town. Upon entering one of the buildings, its occupants immediately introduce their plan of revamping the town with your help. Regardless if you want to or not, you need to make due the time spent here, as the next train to arrive will be far-stretched.

After a quick tutorial, you will have access to a crafting bench, to make useful items, like this bridge, to help you open up more parts of the world.

As you progress further in the game, you unlock new villagers, more land to explore, NPCs that will open up shop, and tons of various items. To make gold you can go fishing, which has an integrated minigame feature, use the net to catch insects, grow crops or collect various items strewn about the world and sell them. You can also help out the villagers to receive a reward for your efforts.

2. Kynseed

Another indie favorite of mine is Kynseed. Created by three people, Charlie, Neal, and Matt- who have previously worked on the Fable series, which I think is an added plus!

The graphics are undeniably quirky as well as the story!

There is a lot you may do here with farming, building relationships/ dating, run a business, adventure and explore the world, and customize your character!

Features a turn-based combat system!

You can be a blacksmith, an apothecary, run a tavern, or own a store! The combat system is turn-based and easy to use! As time passes, your characters, NPCS, and even your pets grow old and eventually pass, implementing a realistic experience. Pass off your skills and legacy to our kids and your powers!

3. Sun Haven

Another beautifully rendered game with an elegant graphic style is Sun Haven. This is another farming and life sim where you can build relationships with your fellow neighbors.

A bit of dialogue choice is always a fun addition to a game!

There are various features that make this game so appealing! From the lovely range of characters, with in-depth personalities and appearance, to the large player customization!

There's the main storyline, with added side quests that help you earn EXP to level up. Three worlds to explore with up to eight of your friends! Yup, I said it, this game has an optional multiplayer mode! The combat system lets you fight arcade style! I'm talking your mage can destroy monsters "Space Invader" style! This game offers an intricate skill tree with over 100 different combinations to choose from! Collect a plethora of Pets, mounts, and furniture to decorate your house!

Another very interesting part of this game is the farming. You can water your plants with magic, and it will rain. Chop them all down at once! Instead of having to focus on each individual plot. How exciting is that?

4. Littlewood

Littlewood is beyond adorable and here's why; you can legitimately build the town!

Did someone ask for a mini farming tycoon?

This game offers a simplistic build mode to get you started on your one and only pixel dream town! There are hundreds of different objects to implement into your town, you can even add different levels of terrain, like hills! You can create a character, talk to the locals, and plant various trees or crops to beautify your Littlewood even further.

Every part of this game is so cute and simple so you can spend hours enjoying every aspect of the game and still put in loads of progress!

5. Farm Together

Makes me want to skip town and start a real-life farm!

Okay, first of all, you can ride a tractor, what more to a farming sim, than being able to ride your own tractor!?

Now, like all farming games, you gotta have a pet and lots of land and crops to plant! You get all of that and more with the ability to use your earned coin to buy new facilities, animals, and new objects to decorate the land and your home!

When you're not playing the time will still pass so that when you return to your farm you won't have to wait to find something else to do. Come back to fully grown, ready to harvest crops, and animals to tend to! You can play with friends, or allow other people to enter your game online.
