Tarkov Made Huge Changes to Prestige and I Don’t Know How to Feel

It's all or nothing at this point.

(Intro)

Prestige is a mechanic in videogames that has been around since as far as I can recall, the original Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. With the idea being that you can sacrifice your progress to start over as if you are a brand-new account, with the added bonus of unlocking new icons for you to climb through, up to ten times. And in pretty much every single game in the franchise since, you have been able to start over and earn new rank icons with that now going up to usually one thousand. Back in the day, when life was so much simpler, so many people had the time, patience and dedication to go through several prestige levels in this franchise. And now, in 2026, more games are taking advantage of this system, including Tarkov. With currently six levels of prestige, each becoming more difficult to unlock as you progress, players have found this system to be engaging for those who are the most passionate and dedicated to this game. An endless grind to work through; starting over as if the game just wiped. To go through the same quests, story missions, unlocking sequences, and more. But recently, the developers took it upon themselves to write up a short diary post about the prestige system and the direction they want to take it. And the main focal point of this blog was talking about how they reduced the requirements for most levels of prestige to a place that feels more obtainable by a larger section of the player base. And as someone who has not and will most likely never engage with this feature, I found it interesting that they would want something that separates the casual and hardcore players for lack of a better word, to become more obtainable by the masses. Maybe they want people to use this feature they added into the game and obtain the special rewards you get for reach new rank, maybe there has been feedback through surveys and general discussion online that players have wanted this system to become easier, I am unsure. But today, let’s go over Tarkov’s prestige system; how the developers feel about it in general. What was made easier about it, and whether or not this will ruin the idea of prestige as a system in Tarkov. It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day, but it’s rare that Tarkov becomes easier in any meaningful regard.

(The developer’s thoughts on prestige)

Prestige was originally introduced all the way back in December of 2024, which I had to look up because it honestly feels like this system has only been around for like a year. But no, it’ll be two years this December which is crazy. It came alongside the Khorovod event and the final Customs expansion. Allowing players to start over with new rewards after reaching and completing certain milestones and accolades. However, one of the major stipulations with entering even just the first prestige was how daunting some of the requirements were. You needed the kappa container; you needed to be a high level, acquire tons of rubles, and have your hideout towards pretty much completion. Which considering how much randomness involved some of those stipulations, it could take you a long time to see it through. And in the blog post, they go over their thoughts and feelings about prestige as a whole. There is an outcry of players who engage with prestige that either want special rewards for completing higher levels of prestige, or players who want this system to be for long term engagement. Between these two camps of thought, their surveyed and internal data suggest that almost ninety percent of players want more out of these systems. They are also aware that some people are still confused by the requirements and have questions about what it takes to prestige. Which is why they are making some rather heavy-handed changes to the system, and the lengths players will actually not have to go for it. And I guess my main question with these changes is does the player base that actually engages with these systems appreciate the changes, or do they feel that it’s kind of a betrayal of what prestige meant from before?

(What has changed?)

From the diary, ultimately what has changed are the requirements to hit the first four levels of prestige. And going through these pictures after the changes, it really feels like they took a sledgehammer to the system as a whole, at least for two thirds of it. I mean, for example, previously, if you wanted to prestige even once, you needed the kappa container. That is no longer the case which means you can skip a massive amount of the game and get right to hitting the benchmarks to reset. Their goals were to not only just lower the barrier of entry for most players who were curious about the system, but also to make the requirements much clearer and more understandable for those who were confused before. The new requirements for the first four prestige levels are shown as well. And man, as someone who never engaged with the system and still probably never will, these seem rather drastic. Level twenty-five alone was immediately the biggest shocker because at that point, you’re only halfway through the first gameplay loop of the game, and now you have the option to start over again. And the only tasks that need to be finished is the first whole chapter of the main story. Again, this is a massive change to how prestige works; the entire system has ultimately been gutted to better serve the player base and allow them to get access to it much faster. Which if I may, feels kind of counter intuitive to the system as a whole. Usually at least with other games, the reason you engage with prestige is because you’ve hit max level or rank and want to do it over again because the game and its systems were so engaging in the first place. And while that philosophy is apparent in the world of Tarkov, it also now feels somewhat truncated from what it was before. Again, maybe this is just me but to hit prestige one, I feel as though the bare minimum level for access should be forty-two; that’s when you get all your traders maxed out, and the soft endgame of Tarkov begins. It’s kind of a rite of passage to get level forty-two the first time; then you can focus on whatever you want, be it more task completion or scouting for fights. At least this way, you can experience a large chunk of the content and tasks available before deciding you want to go through it all over again. The rewards have always been serviceable; a bunch of cosmetics and things to customize both your character and hideout, and these are the kinds of items players are looking for. Something that either looks cool, unique, or can be shown off as like hey I got the item for hitting a certain prestige level. Any item that can be deployed directly against other opponents would probably creep into too powerful a category. We have that enough already with items from Arena right now, so trying to do that from a different gameplay angle would just create more aggravation in making players feel like they need to engage with prestige to have access to all the strong items. For the people in the back that have engaged with prestige before, does this ruin the desire or allure of the system?

(Will this ruin prestige?)

It’s hard to say whether or not these kinds of changes ruin a system like prestige. On one hand, more people will be able to use it and be rewarded with all the items associated with each rank, but now again, the allure and mystique if we want to use that word of hitting higher prestige levels is kind of gone. Was it an absolute slog to get passed even rank one? Yes, but I mean every facet of Tarkov leans heavily in that direction. I guess the goal of 2026 for Tarkov is to tone down some of that grind and the headache of just banging your head against a brick wall regarding some of the more tedious parts of the game. Stuff like having to do the same quest on repeat will still be there, but the randomness of finding and collecting certain items is being removed which is definitely healthier for the game. But something that was introduced and designed to specifically cultivate and nourish players who are dedicated to the endgame or Tarkov are having some of that longevity taken away. Again, I’m curious if they approve of these changes or just don’t care at all. It’ll be interesting to see how many more people choose to participate in this system and how far they manage to get. But first, we still need to get more players through the door. And this combined with all the other changes that are happening to this game to make it easier could persuade some people to try this game for the very first time.

(Outro)

Prestige was a highly requested mechanic in Tarkov to prolong and allow players to extend the end game and provide them the opportunity to start over without having to wait for a wipe or reset their account while getting some new cosmetic items for their troubles in the process. It was very difficult for a long time, which was obviously by design. But now, the tone of Tarkov is certainly changing this year; with a more relaxed approach to progression and grind being tackled and toned down to a place that feels a little more respectful of your time. While it makes systems like these easier to engage with, it begs the question of does it water down the experience to a point where there is little to no satisfaction or gratification for slogging your way through the pervious requirements. Either way, these are certainly interesting changes, and it will be more insightful if they do a follow up diary on this mechanic and talk about what has changed in the data; if more people tried it out, if the numbers went down or stayed the same. Time will only tell. Thank you very much for taking the time out of your day to watch this video. Let me know down in the comment section below your thoughts on the prestige system in Tarkov, if you’re someone who actively engages with it, if you are more interested to try it now that it’s easier and be sure to subscribe for more videos on mechanics that were long requested being changed so they are more obtainable by the masses that still play this game. I hope to see you in future ones.
