One day as I was browsing the wondrous app we call “Facebook” (tm), I came across an ad of a quaint little mobile game named Hole.io. There was a video that frankly, I did not pay any attention to. I scoffed at it and ignored it, assuming it to be an ad for another cheaply made time-waster game. Rightfully so, as these games are abundant on Steam and Mobile cellular devices.
The Revival of Turn-Based Strategy: 'The Battle of Polytopia'
Anyone who is even mildly interested in PC gaming will have heard the name Sid Meier. A pioneer of turn-based strategy, his Civilisation series will forever be the catalyst of nostalgia for gamers all over the world. But while it's great for us to look back on these games with a fondness, there have been little, if any, releases that match Civilisation's calibre. And that's not for want of developers trying. There have been so, so many games that have tried to be the next big turn based strategy, but we all have to admit the playing field has been a bit dry. That is until now; enter: The Battle of Polytopia.
Mark DodgePublished 6 years ago in GamersA Job Within a Job: 'Game Dev Tycoon'
I would be lying if I said my dream job isn’t to be working with or on games. It’s probably pretty obvious– I play them as often as I can and write about them in the spaces between. However, many of the technical roles when working on a game require vasts amounts of mathematical & design skill, as well as a penchant for coding; something of which I am hilariously lacking. Something that I have really noticed recently, however, is that games aren’t offering enough to consumers anymore; we are actively seeking new engagement and unique rewarding experiences from our games and a worrying amount aren’t stepping up to the challenge.
Mark DodgePublished 6 years ago in GamersA Nod to Nostalgia: 'Pokèmon Quest'
If you were to ask me to embody my childhood nostalgia, 90 percent of it would be in the form of some kind of Pokémon game. I wouldn't even like to estimate the amount of time I have poured into the Pokémon series (something that I know many of you will empathise with). From the original Pokemon Red/Blue Gameboy Colour games, all the way through to Pokémon Go and everything in between, rarely have I been disappointed with a Pokémon game... (Okay, I may have had reservations about Pokémon Go's longevity, but I hear it still has a solid fan base behind it!). So I was fairly confident that I was going to enjoy The Pokémon Company's latest release—Pokémon Quest.
Mark DodgePublished 6 years ago in Gamers'Monument Valley' Is Overlooked
The game grew in popularity through App Store promotion and Editor's Choice. However, it is clear that this game has been overlooked. The second game had a beautiful story of the journey of a young girl who was separated from her mother halfway through the story. The one of a kind illusions is beautifully crafted into a story. The development of Monument Valley 2 took one year to complete with the game's company ustwo games to publish it to the Apple's App Store. Even after all the advertising, it has reached massive download numbers but it still hasn't received the online coverage it deserves
Polarized MindsPublished 6 years ago in GamersAn Honest Review of 'Hogwarts: A Mystery'
I grew up with Harry Potter. I made sure my children knew his name practically before they knew their own. So when I heard that there would be a game I could download on my phone to re-live my "glory years?" I was hooked.
