'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' Makes the Switch Worth the Money

The Super Smash Bros. series has been arguably one of the greatest games in the history of fighting games. The amount of success the Nintendo games have had over the years is astounding. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the newest addition to the series, and it hit shelves on December 7 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. There was an enormous amount of hype surrounding Ultimate, however, it's fair to say that it has lived up to, and possibly exceeded, the hype with its chaotic, yet enjoyable, style of play. The Nintendo Switch has been a decent system to date with many enjoyable games to play, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has made buying the Nintendo Switch worth every penny (at least for me).

Anywhere, Anytime

When the Nintendo Switch debuted, one of it's bigger selling points was the ability to take this console on the go. I never took my Switch on the go, simply because I never found a game that I wanted to play so badly that I needed to take my Switch out of the house. Then enters Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. One of my longtime gripes about the Smash series has always been that I always had to stop my game when I needed to leave the house, which got somewhat annoying over time. Now with the Switch, I can keep my matches going anywhere, anytime—already making the Switch a gift from God himself.

Taking Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the go is both a blessing and a curse. The ability to knock my opponents off the map with a Kirby smash attack whenever, wherever is lovely. However, if you're a competitor like me, people might stare at you like you're crazy when you yell and jump for joy after winning a match in public.

The Nintendo Switch was made for Super Smash Bros., and even though Nintendo made us wait over a year and a half after the Switch's release, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate allows us gamers to enjoy the fun of Smash on the toilet, on the bus, on the couch, or even on the moon (shout out to Steph Curry).

Smash-Tastic Gameplay

Getting to the actual game and gameplay, it is utterly fantastic. The ability to play with all the fighters in Smash Bros. history is amazing. With over 70 characters at your disposal, it is almost impossible not to find one character you play well with. You can even have a couple fighters that you play well with and tear apart your competition.

Whether you're fighting against computers or with friends, the fighting is incredible. Every hit and special attack deals damage and players have to balance aggressive offense with timely defense. It only takes one hit or one timely sidestep that can change the outcome of a match. Depending on the map, the match can be somewhat hectic, but still enjoyable. The way characters are sent flying off the map once their damage reaches a high amount is comical and also nerve-wracking. I can recount a number of times me trying to save my character from falling after getting smacked across the map. The items that fall throughout the match are fun to use and give even the sorriest fighter an advantage. From Poke Balls to ray guns, any item can boost your fighter to the top of the standings.

There is no difference in quality when playing on the go, as the game runs smoothly when playing on the Switch in handheld mode. The Switch has the perfect screen to continue the fight on the go, as you can still see everything in clarity. If I dare to point out a negative about the game that would be the loading time. Sometimes the game takes some time to load, but that can be fixed in future updates.

The game gives players so many options, as they can play in team battles, tournaments, regular battles, and much more. Players can even gain spirits through playing in the Spirit Game mode. And let's not forget online play, which really lets gamers see how they compare against other players. The replay value on Smash is infinite (literally)—I have personally played over 200 matches and still have more to explore within the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has already appeared on plenty of the "Top Games of the Year" lists and it's only been out for a week and some change. But that just shows how Nintendo hit a home run, yet again, with its reliable slugger of a game. The greatness of Smash Bros. and the never-ending possibilities with the game has made the Nintendo Switch worth the money to people who have owned the console before and after Smash Ultimate's release, even if that's the only game you buy for it.
