His full initial intent was to treat the entire work as cognitive: He would employ concepts of cognition and conversation to highlight the different facets and processes involved in human cognitive processes. The techniques of play were merely a means to this end, with the clearest example being using the arguments of cognitive processes to explain the world of competitive debates and entertaining disagreements among peers.

But, the situation in games changed dramatically with the introduction of two particular technological innovations: artificial intelligence (AI) and object-based computation (OCP). Computer scientists throughout the 1980s were developing increasingly sophisticated computer systems capable of playing games.

Computer scientists were focusing on scenarios, describing situations where players could make important decisions. Computer games of this era incorporated layers of strategic situations, deep explanations of the consequences of making certain decisions, and discussions around why certain decisions were chosen, thus establishing the underlying concepts of cognitive decision-making.

To explain these cognitive processes, computer scientists developed scenarios for players to go through and situations in the game to justify why certain decisions were made. For example, in a 1982 computer game called Go, computer players had to take actions at a time and in a game that was described by algorithms. Different parts of the computer could decide how the players behaved.

These situations could be combined in different ways to create deeper understanding of certain situations. For example, a computer simulation for Go is said to reflect a cognitive situation, while a cognitive simulation is said to be the deeper explanation for how players get to make a particular decision.

These situations provide explanations of how human beings explain their decisions to themselves. Computers played the role of human beings in developing explanations for their decisions and explaining to themselves why they made certain judgments.

Play and cognition

Nowadays, computers play and interpret games, while human beings play games as well, to better understand cognitive processes. The purpose of games and simulations is to better understand human cognitive processes in general.

Cognitive cognition is said to be an explanation of the consequences of cognitive decisions, which come from different judgments about the situational settings and reasons that led players to make specific decisions. For instance, it can be the explanation for why certain players were more attentive to certain kinds of cues, which led to the assessment of that player as a more strategic player.

The ongoing argument about which cognitive processes are cognitive and which are non-cognitive is a debate of the latter.

Not everything is cognitive. Some situations are of a non-cognitive nature, which computer-assisted plays help to explain.

Advantages of playing

While computer games and simulations helped to explain cognitive processes, the usefulness of these simulation tools was hindered by the explanation process. Each situation was explanable only by its results, which involved a decision by the player to make a cognitive process or another non-cognitive process.

This information could only explain how a decision was made and how that decision led to a certain outcome. Once the explanation was determined, a new decision was required for the game to make it clear for players to continue the explanation.

Using the explanation process as a tool to guide players through the situation was a problem. After all, players would have to follow the explanations that had been given, which would lead to results that could be more complex.

But, with computer simulations, the choice of which decision to make could be given in situations with very little explanation. Once a decision was determined, the explanation for the choice could be introduced.
