Netflix And Chill Won't Be Happening With The Nintendo Switch, At Least Not At Launch

The Nintendo Switch will be launched as the first-of-its-kind home and mobile hybrid, but will be missing a large portion of the multimedia experience.

All the hype behind the Nintendo Switch has got the internet buzzing with questions, rumors, fears, dreams and literally everything in between. This upcoming launch for the Nintendo Switch is primed to either blow up or fizzle out, and I'm personally hoping for the first to happen because I'm extremely excited for the #Nintendo #Switch to change how I do mobile gaming.

Yet if certain rumors are to be believed, it looks as though the Nintendo Switch will launch as the first-of-its-kind home and mobile hybrid, but will be missing a large portion of the multimedia experience that the standard home consoles have.

The PR team has explained to Business Insider that Netflix will not be available on the console when it launches on March 3rd.

Now that's not to say that Netflix won't ever be available, but Nintendo isn't planning on the Switch being a multimedia powerhouse. So, for at least a few months at the least you'll have to watch the 2nd season of Voltron: Legendary Defenders and Marvel's Iron Fist somewhere else.

If you remember, both the Wii and the Wii U launched without the ability to stream Netflix, although when the Wii launched Netflix was still primarily a DVD on demand service, rather than one of the most accessed streaming service in the world. Yet, this is pretty normal. Nintendo has always put emphasis on gaming functionality rather than entertainment services.

Most likely, Netflix functionality will be added after the global launch of the console and gamers have settled into understanding how to use the hybrid console.

So, while you shouldn't plan to Netflix and Switch any time soon, there are plenty of games that you'll be able to fill your time with as Nintendo introduces the entertainment services.

We know that these games will be available at launch with many more becoming available in the following months.

  • 1,2 Switch
  • ARMS
  • The Legends of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Just Dance 2017
  • Skylanders Imaginators

So it's not a question of available content, but the question will likely become how long do we have to wait for Nintendo to let us switch (mwahaha) from The Legend of Zelda to The Defenders when we're on a viable WiFi network.
